Pro photographer for a few years, then aerospace R&D engineer (electronic countermeasures). Got tired of the gov't shenanigans after awhile and went into private sector hardware engineering. When the Internet took off, switched from hardware to software engineer for many years, specializing in embedded systems. Got Meniere's Disease a few years ago, so now disabled/retired.

I finished eight years in the Royal Navy on Wednesday last week, as a marine engineer. I've been unemployed since Thursday, but I start as an electrical maintenance technician in a plate glass factory tomorrow!
More money, more time off, and a union to fight my corner! I'm really looking forward to it.

I - along with my wife - work as a freelance translator, interpreter and a communication consultant. That means I write copy, speeches, promotional stuff, do concept development, and other time consuming stuff. Best part is we get to make up our own hours, and do not give crap about the corporate slaves who have to get up at some ungodly hour to make a 07:30 meeting across town.

Interesting thread. I'm self-employed; work on computers and write books (and other related things, like right now, I'm converting two print-only books into e-format for a publisher). I used to work at some big computer companies and then some big copier companies but the severe arthritis in my lumbar spine brought me grinding to a halt by 2010 so I have to work on my own schedule. No way to get rich, but no choice for me right now (plus I love writing). Served four honorable years in the U.S. Air Force as a Precision Measurement Equipment Laboratory Specialist.

Hope you all don't get all wind up now... I work with the best consol around, PlayStation.
Back in the mid 80's I was a Legionaire in the French Foreign Legion, 2:nd Parachute regiment. I have also worked as a chef, but quit that when I felt that everything I cooked was the same. I just lost the interest in cooking.

I am a director at a shelter for victims of domestic violence and I'm project director at another one. I've worked alongside the same company for ap. 17 yrs. Before that I was a cert nurses aid and med tech. Before that it was doctoring cattle in Texas ranches and feed yards and my first job was a stint in the Air Force as security policeman. That just about covers my adult life.

I'm a WWII addict so I'm fascinated with the history and what it has led to. Did you jump? I lost two distant cousins in WWII that are both buried in France; both were 82nd Airborne; one was infantry, one engineer. They died in Nov. and Dec. of 1944.

(This company are specialists at mountain warefare.) My speciality within the section was as a sniper. To bad about your cousins, so close to the end of the war...

Reason I asked about jumping is for every regimental duty you find in the US, you find six support people under every fighter. I've heard Corsica was beautiful. Two bad you had to learn now to make peoples' heads explode. Yes, my family made it past the D-Day drops and all of that mess, and just needed to hang on for a few more months. C'est dommage.

Corsica is beautiful but you don't have that much free time to enjoy it... You are always training. In the Legion's parachute regiment everybody jumps, including support people... The Parachute Regiment of the Legion is not that big. It's only about 1200 employees. I'd say they are the best that France has to offer. It's also a perfect political weapon (Officially, there are no French citizens in the legion). If they send the Legion on a mission and if the sh-t hits the fan: No french lives were lost. If the mission is a success: French army get's the credit!
