Oh yeah dogs, if you see one coming at you slow down, yeah I know it's not what you wanna do, but the dog will adjust to your lower speed and once he's fairly near you then accelerate, once a dog is at full run it's hard for him to change direction so he'll miss you. Has worked for me, once I learned this trick for 30 years.

It has nothing to do with the laws of physics- you`re running into deaf deer! But seriously, the whistles make unltrsonic noise. The pets and animals responding to my car prove that. It just depends on whether you have STUPID deer- if a deer hears it he can run the other way or he can keep going toward your path. Ever blow your horn at a stupid dog that still kept running in front of you? Or an SUV for that matter? The devices work-just not all deer do...

It has everything to do with the laws of physics, go stand on the side of a busy road and listen to the cars go by, doesn't work when you're 100 ft. away have to be close to the road. You can't hear cars coming nearly as well as you can hear cars going away. The deer whistles are the same thing, they are great for scaring deer away from the car behind you, doesn't do you much good though.

I still have to disagree! The deer whistles blow an ultrasonic whistle, something we can't hear, so it's not like an aerodynamic car designed to be quiet, more like an ice cream truck with that gawd awful music playing that you can hear from the next neighborhood! This topic has really been fun though! Should I say it again? Is he going to say it! Oh no, I think he is! For $5, it's worth the chance of being right! Remember, 30 years ago cigarettes were good for you, and most doctors recommended Chesterfields! -Rich

Bill,
And there are studies both ways, for and against, just like every other topic. I actually haven't had a dog chase me in my neighborhood for a long time... that is, until I brought the il Bello home, which doesn't have them.
There is one in particular in a fenced yard on the way to my house that goes crazy and runs all the way down the fence chasing any motorcycle as it passes, but not my Roketa. There is no explanation for this, and he did chase it until I got the horns.
Two other people told me the same thing. Even if it's the placebo effect, it's worth it!

I'm glad I found this topic this morning. On my way home from work last night, around 10:00, I saw 3 deer on one of the darkest stretches of highway in Texas. two of them were on the right-of-way next to the pavement, one back a few feet. As I approached, they stopped dead in their tracks and didn't move. Yes I have the horns on my bike! Oh not only do they WORK, but they LOOK COOL too! :-). OH yeah, there was a black bear run over in the area not too far from those deer earlier in the week. I guess whatever hit it didn't have horns on?,,,,lol Mark

It has everything to do with the laws of physics, go stand on the side of a busy road and listen to the cars go by, doesn't work when you're 100 ft. away have to be close to the road... Bill, The ultrasonic sound these produce is similar to a dog whistle. While we cannot hear it due to the frequency, animals can, and over vast distances. It is nothing like the minimal sound of a car approaching. In human terms, it would be more like a train approaching blowing it's horn. When I take my dog to the camp, all I have to do is blow the dog whistle and he'll come running, even if he was a mile away, he hears it and comes right in. I can't help wondering why so many people want to dispute these things! If they scare off or freeze just one animal that might have run into you, they've done their job. It's like getting a cup of Starbucks Coffee (same price too!), it's a personal choice. I would never pay $5 for a 20 cent cup of coffee, but I don't go to the Starbucks discussion groups and tell them in a round about way that they're all idiots for doing so either! I say, skip the Starbucks coffee today and get a pair! You'll never know for sure if they worked for you, but you'll never know for sure if they didn't! I also have insurance on my 50cc scoot knowing that I won't ever hit anyone... is this silly too? -Rich

The problem is I personally know a couple people that ride bikes that have hit dear that had absolutely no response at all from the installed deer whistles that they both had on their bikes. We can learn from other riders successes also from their failures.
One serious problem with all animals, people included, is that when surprised they tend to freeze and not instantly react. Having a deer freeze directly in your path doesn't help you out a heck of a lot. At 60 mph by the time they do start to react you've likely already hit them.
The best defense for deer is to limit your riding at dusk when they are the most active, also just prior to sunrise, and if you can't then slow down and pay very close attention to the sides of the road.
Again, they might do something and if this makes you feel better by all means use them. Just don't trust that they are going to save you, cause they might not.
