As some of you may know from a previous post I made I just purchased a Kymco People 250 and I test drove it once before Thanksgiving and the weather of yesterday got to me. So I spent some of my time reading here. I saw one post where an owner of a People 250 wanted to know why the speedometer was in kilometers with larger letters than the miles per hour, which is in smaller and hard to see numbers. I, too, agree that someone out there should be able come out with a speedometer inlay that would make it the other way around. But my real question goes to the ODOMETER. Am I to understand that the odometer reads in kilometers or in miles driven? Since I rode a Yamaha 350 in Germany for a couple of years in service and am quite familiar with multiplying .62 times KPH to get MPH and miles driven, this will have a direct impact on when I have to return for my first service at 300km to the dealer. I have 38 showing on the odometer now. Q: Is that kilometers or is that miles on the OD? It is not labeled on the bike. Also, I will have to know that to compute my gas mileage. It looks like when Kymco decided to deal in the United States they could have made a very slight modification in the speedometer and odometer if they really wanted US business. Whatta you figure? Oh well, I served in the military over in Taiwan too and enjoyed it very much but thought they were more "brill" business people! Joe

As the prominent display on the speedo is metric I would think the odometer is metric as well. Most of the world is metric and I guess the US being imperial should be a large enough market to justify a mod to the speedo, a different inlay in the speedo should be easy enough, but the odometer reading would require a different gearing, which should also be simple enough, but then again I have no influence over the decision making at Kymco.
I had a Lifan Dual Sport with the speedo display in mph only, I soon found out though the odometer reading was in metric, which means they simply changed the display for the US market, which is where I bought it. It didn't really bother me though I'm so used to the main numbers and its conversion, as I had many old cars in Canada with a mph display in a metric signed Country. 30 mph is 50 km/h, 40 mph is 60 km/ etc, you quickly get used to it. Also to figure out the odometer, just check and compare to a mileage marker one can find almost anywhere in the US, if it says 5 miles and your odometer reads around 8 you know its metric.
Love that Kymco, I think its one of the nicest 250's out there, enjoy.

The S-250 has an analog speedometer in KM's. The Odometer can be set to either / or. It's digital. I set mine to Miles and I checked that number against the KM setting and it definitely is correct either way you have it set.
For $ 119 you can add a VAPOR unit that reads in MPH plus has a tach and engine temp gage. It's back lighted and works great I'm told.
