Today the scooter started shaking very badly. I do not feel safe riding it any more.
I put the scooter up on the center stand and I noticed the rear wheel is very loose. I can move it side-to-side about an inch.
Any idea what this could be?
The scooter is an MC-54 and it is only 2 months old.

Loose drive shaft bolt or possible broken drive shaft. Not sure if that the correct terminology, but its the bolt that goes thru the rear wheel.

Had the same problem with my mc-54. It was a loose bolt that mounts the engine, drive train assembly. Have someone move the wheel back and forth and see where the looseness is coming from. The wheel itself wasn't loose, it was the entire unit where it mounted to the scooter frame. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I have taken the scooter to a local dealer and he is looking at it. I will forward this information to him. Thanks.

Spazoo; Let us know the specifics of the cause. Will help others! Good move on your part if you didn't feel confident diagnosing this because it could be very dangerous.

mc 54 / 250b has a nylon rear axle locking nut, comes loose often, pop a 19mm wrench on it and tighten it up... recheck it about every 500 miles

The problem was the rear axle nut. It had become loose. Thanks for the info.

Spazoo; Glad it was found and taken care of before a serious problem occurred!

That is scary. Thanks for reminding me to do a good safety check of all my nuts and bolts. It should really be done often on 2-wheel vehicles because their is no room for accidents.

Shortly after I got my Tank 150, the rear axle nut fell completely off. I could tell that something was wrong, but was new to scooters at the time and didn't know there was supposed to be a nut there. I rode it that way for a couple of weeks before finally figuring out the problem. I'm grateful I'm still alive .... Gary

Unlike a solid bolt type axle (such as the front wheel), the rear axle nut being gone would not cause the wheel or axle to fall off since it is retained by bearings on both sides, and is actually captive. However, with the nut gone you will experience wheel movement, especially in turns. This movement could cause a lot of stress on the CVT casting and the right side swingarm, so obviously it should be corrected, and checked often. The problem is that the direction of force on the nut (RH threaded) is naturally wanting to loosen it. You should use Loctite on the rear axle nut since these scooters have the wrong thread direction in this location (should be a left hand thread). Be sure to check the nut regularly and always use Loctite on them. Stan Shortly after I got my Tank 150, the rear axle nut fell completely off.
