hey lancer, if you want to make it look good go to home depot in the roofing section. they have real shiny alum in a roll that is used for roof flashing. just cut it lenght wise if it isnt long enought with tin snips and rivet it to your muffler with st. stl rivets. its thin and obsorbs alot of heat. good-luck.

tp555, I built a single place, open cockpit airplane (Volksplane) powered by a VW engine. Most of the VW powered airplanes have 4 short exhaust stacks on them, pointing straight down, which does little to make flying them very pleasant, noise-wise. On my plane, I had a muffler shop make the exhaust system for it using four, long pipes which terminated between the landing gear with VW exhaust tips on the ends of the pipes. It really looked great with the chrome tips, but, moreover, it was sooooo quite you could tell if the valves needed adjusting by being able to hear the tic, tic, tics. These tips were from the VW parts house and they looked and worked great. The VW cars that used these chrome tips (always a pair of them), were actually quite loud without the tips. The tips were actually the "mufflers" because they were/are designed with a lining that breaks up the sound waves which supresses the noise. Since my airplane had 4 of them, it was very quiet.
I was planning on making an exhaust unit using two VW tips adjoined at a hand-made "Y" attached to the exhaust pipe. Is this what you did...what did your VW tip design look like, or, how did you attach the tips to the exhaust pipe? And why do you think this design is not good?

Lancer150, Thanks, know this thread is a bit old but I just did the Tractor Muffler upgrade. I got mine at Tractor Supply Company for about $27, cut the old off and welded it to the Old pipe and welded the lower bracket to the muffler. My stock muffler had such thin metal the brackets and fender braces were tearing the metal at the welds. I love it, thanks for the post.
