DC CDI

I own three scooters. One is a Tank, one is a Velocity, and the other is a Lance scooter. I love the Lance scooter, but it's not as fast as the others, so I looked into getting a new CDI for it. Now I know that Lance scooters are DC and I know they have a different stater than others. So when I found Scrappy Dog Scooters, on ebay, guaranteeing their CDI would work on a Lance scooter, I bought it. First they sent me an AC one, which they rectified that problem. I got the DC one today. The first thing I noticed was that the CDI was the same size as the AC one, and I know DC CDI's are bigger. Well, I put the CDI in any way, and it just burned up. I just contacted them over the problem but haven't heard back from them yet. But this post is not to knock them. They have been nice so far. My real question... Does anyone know of a DC CDI that WILL work on a Lance Scooter? I have been posting on my scooter experiences in my blog. You can read them here if you like... www.scooters.randirain.com

Post a picture of the ORIGINAL CDI and the WIRES with the PLUGS that plug into the CDI. That way we know if it is a totally differrnt CDI than most all other scooters. Then we can help you find the right cdi for your ride. Lefty

What motor is on your scoot is it a 139QMB 50cc or is it a 150cc motor 157QMJ or what? The motor will be stamped on the motor case right by the CVT cover. Lefty

Working on the picture... but it is a 150cc and it says.. from what I can read... 157QMJ. Cool, there are plenty of performance cdis for that motor. But need to see the wires on the plug that plug into the CDI. That will tell if it is a DC or AC cdi. I have a 157QMJ and mine is a AC CDI. Easyiest way to know if you need an AC or DC CDI is plug it in turn the key on and Either with a 12V LIGHT TESTER or a Volt meter touch the BOTTOM WIRE on the 2 PLUG CDI. If a LIGHT TEST the light will light If a VOLT METER it will register 12v. If nothing then you have a AC CDI. Lefty

From what I read... it's a DC.
It's bigger, only one wire going to the power, and the lights come on when you turn the key, not when you turn the engine on.
From what I have read... that means DC.

So why do you think that CDI I bought didn't work?
Is it the wrong CDI for the stater?
Or was it just another AC CDI that was sent?

Be sure and post back here whether or not the new DC cdi you get from Tvnacman works for you. We've had some issues with certain Lance models, and Eton Beemer 2's that look exactly like the standard gy6 DC cdi, but are wired differently, and just fry the DC/DC converter inside the cdi. I'd like to be able to identify which Lance model yours is and get it listed on our site, and maybe source some to stock. BTW, we've been selling cdi's in ac and dc for fours years now, so yes, we do know the difference. We do have a new shipping clerk, again, and he sent you an ac the first time, but the second one is marked dc, so it is. Our performance cdi's use the same case in ac and dc so are the same size physically. that advertised on the website too. I use a DC unit on my TGB. Anyway, please post back! I asked Shelly in the office to refund you for your purchase. You don't need to send the burnt one back.

Yeah, my experience is if you plug a DC into an AC system, the engine will run, but it won't shut off. If you plug an AC into a DC system, it will blow the fuse. I'm curious why her fuse didn't blow, if there is one. If you plug a DC cdi into an Eton Beemer, it will not start. We had 2 other issues with a particular Lance model where the system fried the cdi when plugged in. Neither one of the customers would cooperate enough to tell me which Lance they had. I'm hoping the OP here will post back so we can get that information on the website.

First let me say that Scrappy Dog has been great help and these posts are no way negative towards them. I highly recommend them, as they do want to provide a great service.
I have been talking with the buggy parts people, and they think it will work, but it's a little pricey to take the plunge for not being 100% sure. So I probably won't be buying it.
I will however be happy to help identify what Lance scooter I have. Let me know what info you need and where to find it and I will be happy to let you know.
There is fuse on it and it didn't blow. I plugged the stock CDI in and it runs.
It must be something with the stator. That's all I can think it could be.

Yes, most places want an arm and a leg for those things compared to what we sell parts for, as we're an actual volume importer. It's a standard industry practice to have the no returns policy on all electrical parts, mainly because of issues like this, so I can understand that it's quite the plunge if it burns up too, which I think it will. Anyway, you should have a model name written on the body panel or something. Lance is a manufacturer, not a model. Like Ford, but the model is Mustang. I'd be more interested to hear from you after you get another CDI from elsewhere, like Tvnacman's, to see if the same issue happens. This would be quite helpful.

You will never get someone to tell you YES it will work on your scooter. For someone to say that they would have to have the same scooter as yours and have tried whatever the part is. All the stuff on the sites are aftermarket parts and are not by the manufactuer of the scooter. If you want an OEM part for your scooter you have to get in touch with the manufactuerer or the dealer that sells them may be able to get the OEM part for you.
How and what are you going to do IF the OEM CDI goes bad, you will be in the same pickle. Lefty

Well....
Searching for this CDI, I have been able to find the stock version. So if it goes bad, I guess I will do that. What I can't find is a performance CDI that will work.
What blows my mind is that no one knows the answer of why it won't work. There can't be that many reasons.
My guess, based on my searches, is the different stators. I guess I will have to take it apart and see which one is on there. I don't have one of those pullers though.

We can ge a better idea with a pic of the stator plugs . The ac firrd scooters have two bullet plugs , the dc fired ones only have one . we seem to think yours is dc , so the plug from the stator should only have one (blue blue/white) . On the ac onrs blue/white and red/black .
