I ordered a new tao tao atm-50 last Monday and i was to get it this Wednesday so i ordered a new carb cdi coil and variations sliders to install when it gets here but i just checked tracking info and it will not be here till Monday
It may be the storm that is in the mid-west and heading this way
I know i can't ride it now as i live in mid-michigan and the roads are all snow covered but i'm looking forward to the tear down and rebuild then test and tune in the warehouse my neighbor has then
me and a friend are going to Florida next mouth and we are taking are scooters with us i hope i can get it done in time

Hi Hope you get it all worked out swiftly and easily And make sure you check the scooter laws in florida as they may be different then where you are located I think you need a motorcycle endorsement insurance registration and tags in that state ( Florida)no matter the size of the scoot Take care and ride safely Yours Hank

I will have insurance as i can get it for $50 for a year so if something was to happen i would be covered and it will be registered in Michigan as a moped but i did not think about any thing else

This is the start of my build. Sliders are on ordered I know i need to have a scooter first but i told the wife i was going to build one around the carb. LOL IF it has a 63cc in it then i'm just going to get some gears and i'm done for performance but if not it will be BBK time. I only have $670 in to it all as of now. THANKS ALL Attachments:

Hi You should at least wait until the new engine is broken in before making any major modifications imho And be aware that technically once you do the bbk the scoot is not classified as a 50 cc scoot any more so if you are in a state that requires additional license or paperwork for scoots larger then a 50 and you dont have them and you are stopped by the police say for going over the speed limit restriction for 50s and they pull over and find out your opening your self up for legal problems Take care and ride safely Yours Hank

I agree with Hank enjoy it and maybe mod the CVT and save the BBK for later . To me it makes no sense to take apart a new engine without enjoying it first

Plus that gives you a starting place so you will be able to see the diff with a BBK and ACME jet pack

I don't want to do a BBK that is why i hope it's a 63cc but we have alot of hills here that is why i want a little more power then i will need to have a good cruising speed of 40-45

I had 8 gram rollers and replaced em with 5 grams and wow it was faster . You will need a new carb in order to fine tune it and they are as low as 30 bucks and rollers 10 and up .

In FL you only need a motorcycle endorsement for anything over 49cc. The TaoTao ATM50 on paper is 49cc, so no endorsement (nor insurance) needed here. If you do a BBK mod, you still don't need an endorsement, because technically, when it comes from the factory as a 49cc, you can't change the paperwork on it later on. However, if a cop stops you because you're going too fast for a 50cc (chances are small, because 2strokes can go very fast), you could get into trouble if you don't have an endorsement. I believe in FL the legal top speed for a 50cc is 40MPH. Anything faster requires an endorsement.. However no one ever stopped me when I was going almost 50, or even passed 50MPH.
In FL you don't need insurance, however, if you're riding without helmet, you need a personal insurance covering at least $10k (which is a minimum personal insurance). This does not have to be a scooter insurance, but could be insurance you get from your work. Otherwise you need to use a helmet. I don't know if the same is true for 49cc scoots, but on motorcycles this is the case.
The stock 50cc engine does 45+ on level ground, and takes about 10 blocks to get there. It goes down to 32,5-35MPH on a bridge (depending on weight, could get as low as 25MPH). You will want at least a 72 or 75cc BBK if you want to ride in hilly areas at 45MPH.

I live in Panama City beach and the cops here don't mess with the scooter riders unless you're just acting stupid. Unless its bike week you will see more scooters then motorcycles. We have a lot of scooters here but no clubs that I know of which is kind of weird. If you are going to be coming to Florida for spring break three things will keep you out of trouble: stay off the horn, no U turns and do the speed limit.

When is spring break? We will be staying in Daytona Beach from the 14th to the 21st. Hi March 5-23, (pretty evenly spread out, numbers-wise) are the key spring break dates across the United States and thus when the largest number of universities will be on break. "Spring break" can be any time between the end of February and the middle of April -- depends on the school. There is no one week when the entire country's colleges simultaneously disgorge students onto the beach Take care and ride safely Yours Hank

You can ride it a little without the cover. I used to do it a lot b/c it was easier for CVT tuning. Just hand tighten a few CVT cover bolts and start it normally or use an impact gun or something on the variator nut to turn over the engine (the starter bendix can't engage without the cover in place).
Brings me back seeing a fresh and new orange Tao Tao ATM50 like I had. Haven't seen it in a few months, last I heard the kid I sold it to was still having a blast with it.

Nice! How is it feeling so far? I loved my ATM50-A1. I think they are great affordable little scooters and don't care what anyone thinks. I beat the living crap out of mine and had no major problems for 2500 mi / 3 mo before selling it at the end of riding season in October.
