That's pretty much me in a nutshell.
Hi, I'm Hakan, and I live in Istanbul, Turkey.
I am into automobiles, photography, scooters now, obviously, rc model aircraft, quiet walks on the beach (sorry wrong forum...), and tinkering with whatever comes my way.
I have successfully turned my once docile NB Miata into a 375+ Hp reliable monster with lots of sweat and patience. The engine feeds off of an MP62 blower spinning at a little over 16K rpm.
There was a really cool looking scooter parked on the sidewalk one day, as I was out grocery shopping. Next thing I know, I was at the ATM, withdrawing cash for the jewelry store owner who was willing to part with the thing for a very reasonable amount.
The "thing" is a Kanuni Merlin. It's a Turkish brand, specializing in mixing and matching Chinese components, as well as leaving critical nuts and bolts loose on their products.
Merlin has 16" wheels, and the dreaded BNGY6 engine.
Though power is anemic at just under 8 hp, it handles and stops with confidence. Tons of luggage room make errands easy, and to be perfectly honest with you guys, the damn thing is amazingly reliable.
But it lacks power. Especially on main thoroughfares and highways.
I can almost hear you guys asking why I ever bother riding a scooter on the highway when I have a super duper Miata that'll get me wherever I am going safe, sound and dry..
Two reasons. Istanbul is plagued with an incredibly incredible traffic problem. Freeways may turn into parking lots any second. Emergency lane is fair game for bikes and scooters, so it's much faster to ride sometimes.
Second reason is, well, gas happens to be just a little over $10/gallon over here. You kinda feel it deep in yourass I mean, pocket if you feel brave enough to fill up the entire tank.
So, a scooter is an excellent idea.
I - along with my wife - work as a freelance interpreter and a communication consultant. That means I write copy, speeches, promotional stuff, do concept development, and other time consuming stuff. Best part is we get to make up our own hours, and do not give crap about the corporate slaves who have to get up at some ungodly hour to make a 07:30 meeting across town.
Anyway... I get the feeling I am turning this thing into a ramble post.
In short, I have a scooter. I also have tools. I also know how to use those tools. And, I am prepared to use them.
