I decided to gut my muffler and convert it to a straight through setup while waiting for a few other parts here's a few pics of the progress, No wonder it's restrictive. Stock muffler reverses flow direction 4 times. Attachments:

this is the gutted glass packed shell. Note the fiberglass held in by mesh. Soon to by a straight through glasspack muffler. Attachments:

Just inside the muffler in the inlet tube was this honeycomb. Is this a catalitic converter element? Attachments:

Got the end cap and new outlet tube welded on. Harbor freight mig welder wasn't the best thing to use. I melted a few holes in the shell then had to weld over 'em and had many pinhole leaks to go back over. Oxy/Act with a welding tip or tig welder would have made it a one pass welding job. Picture on the left has the old outlet tube inside the new one to show the size increase. Right picture shows straight through exhaust path. Looking through my harley mufflers, I noticed this setup has more in common with my great sounding screaming eagle II mufflers than my no name straight through mufflers that sound a bit more harsh. Hopefully this setup'll have that SE II type deep rumble. Attachments:

I finished welding the muffler. Nice sounding rumble at idle through half throttle. then it gets a little loud. Probably to loud for residential streets at full throttle, But then 1/2 throttle or less is all that's needed for 30mph. For hiway feeder roads the noise level is acceptable for me, Might be a little loud for some though. No noticable change in performance other than cold starts seem lean, it dies a few times at idle, and dies when throttle opened until it's had 20-30 seconds to warm up. That might just be the 6 month old stale gas. Maybe I'll be able to go up one size main jet without it being too rich now and gain a bit of performance. I'll try that after I get the plastics back on and get some fresh gas in it. My muffler mod will proably make more of a difference once I change the following later: variator, to 115mm, carb to 28 or 30mm, 30mm intake, big port head, bigger valves, 10k+ rpm valve springs, a9 cam.

make sure you get the right size jet in your carb.
