Stiv - Unfortunately too many who get militant about registration/insurance laws and the lack of affordability of them still have money for booze and smokes. When I was going through those tough times one of my biggest fears was getting clipped by somone who had more than me but was driving uninsured because they felt it was unfair to be required to carry liability insurance to cover losses they caused to someone else.
Priviledges do come with responsibilities and liabilities. Who do you protect those who want to drive uninsured because they feel their situation demands it or those that might be injured by those uninsured riders/drivers. Don't say it does not happen wither. A good friend of mine had to deal with having her adult son hit by someone on and uninsured moped while he was standing at the crosswalk breaking his leg in 4 places. Ruined his life leaving him unable to care for his children seeing them farmed out around the country to live with relatives. He eventually died of a blood clot from his minimally attended inuries. If the rider that hit him had been insured then he would have gotten much better medical care. If he could have afforded the proceedure to put in the recommended filter the bood clot would not have killed him.

That sounds like where I'm coming from, I mean I definitely had to give up some worldly pleasures for a while to get my act together and get things paid. So I feel pretty strongly about liability insurance being mandatory - that is an awful story about your friend's son getting hurt and it doesn't have to be that way. But I still think the state requiring highway use tax and registration fees and a license equates to more cost-prohibitive red tape for the guy just trying to make due. I don't see how any of that benefits the other motorists of NC. There are so many people that drive their cars without proper registration or licenses now as it is... When I first started driving my grandfather told me always no matter what have insurance coverage and all that other stuff is just nice to have when you get pulled over

This whole motorcycle endorsement crap for scooters is wrong in my opinion. If a person can ride a bicycle, they can ride a scooter, Twist and go is a wonderful thing. It should already be covered under your standard drivers license. No way. I learned a lot reading the motorcycle safety manual for the written test to get my endorsement. It has very little to do with shifting gears and using a clutch, and covers a lot of stuff like lane position, properly taking curves, and protecting your lane from motorists. I think the written test didn't go nearly far enough.

There's no reason for somebody to have a license for a 50cc, I would argue anyone with roller skates or a bicycle should have one as well then.

Hi I cant say i agree with that A lot of 50 cc scoots can easily reach speeds of 35 to 40 mph and most have them modded for even more speed They are a motor vehicle and can reach speeds that combined with their weight mass and momentum can be dangerous and quite hazardous for both the rider and others around them on the road if they happen to loose control of the scoot Imho you should have at least a valid motor vehicle license to have the privilege to operate them on public roads Take care and ride safely dear friend Yours Hank

Fuggin drunks. EVERYONE on the road need license, insurance, and tag, period. ^^^^totally agree with this^^^^^^^ Legislation, registration and accountability. If you're on the road with power, you should be legal, trained and insured. Anything else is irresponsible and morally wrong. Whether you lost your license through drinking, drugs, speeding, or any other driving offence, there's no way you should be on the road. Don't quite agree with Obama hate, but that's another discussion! Horses for courses I guess. Lol

I just don't get where y'all draw the line. 50cc scooter, moped, bicycle retrofitted with a small gasoline motor, electric scooter (which any kid can ride)..... if you're going to say any gasoline or electric powered device requires a license PowerWheels just went out of business.

I've heard of other states having separate licensing requirements for mopeds and things of the like. That isn't a horrible idea and could serve some benefit. But like I've said all along liability insurance is really the only thing that matters to the actual people you're on the road with. I could care less whether the other people driving their cars have active licenses or registrations as long as they've got insurance coverage if they hit me.
