Hello,
I currently wear a full face helmet and while I don't dislike it, there's things that I'd prefer different. While I understand the differences in protection, there are assumptions I have made about comfort, that I wouldn't mind correcting or corroborating.
Full face: Good all round protection, even when face planting the black stuff. Extra warmth. Steaming visor meaning it has to stay open a crack or more, letting debris, wind and a cold strip of air into the face. A pain in the arse with my glasses to put on and take off. Nose dribble: I'm building up some gunk inside the front of the helmet from the cold making my nose run with nothing I can do about it! Bluergh.....
Open face: Better vision. (assumption) Better with my glasses. No visor steaming meaning I can have it down all the time and get less wind, rubbish and cold in my face (assumption) Smaller in the under seat storage (assumption again) Less protection in a crash.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I appreciate helmet choice (or even whether or not to wear one in the states) is subjective, so people will have different views. My instructor on my CBT suggested an open face for better vision and ease of use with glasses, but I'm of the opinion that it doesn't matter what YOU can see, or how good YOU are, there's always some idiot stupid enough to **** you out of stupidity, so I'm not sure if the benefits of avoiding a crash out weigh the drawbacks in an actual crash.
Thanks for your help, Ian.

Lol, if I had the weather for it that'd be the one (or a "Tommy" version if they do one) do you know if they conform to 22:05 (the British/European helmet standard)?

Yeah...... They give the benefit of easy on/off for glasses, and i can leave it on getting gas etc, but still have the issue of misting the visor with it shut.
I'll have to find some locals who ride and see if I can borrow one for a bit.
I've got a spare full face to eBay, so should have some funds to buy something good.

Hi Ian I have many different styles and types of helmets Ive found over the years that i wear the full face ones the most out of all the others for comfort( better wind protection and lower noise level) and the added safety level of a full head enclosure My main requirements as well are a snell or at least dot approval Take care and ride safely dear friend Yours Hank

I use the 3/4 with no face shield. But, it has detachable ear covers for cold and hot weather.

At 80 mph the bugs shure smart when they hit. I'm with Hank. Full fade is a lot more comfortable. Since I also do a lot of in town riding sometime, I often ride using a modular helmet. I like being able to open up to chat a moment as well as the much better ventalation on the hot/humid weather we have for 8 months or more. And of course just a quick reach up and it slams shut and gives me a lot more protection from minor stuff and in case of a crash than any open face. NOt a perfect answer but I still need to run 55 for a little ways just to keep from being in the way. lefty2

Yeah, the debris does sting: I have a small line across my face where rain or snow flakes hurt like hell, it also feels like there could be some frostbite one day! Not to mention the eyes watering if the wind is in the wrong direction, and just catches the visor wrong and comes in sideways.
It's why I'm leaning towards an open face, with a full length visor. So I can avoid that gap along cheek bone level, or at least have it further down and take the hits on my chin.
How do your open face lids with visors feel? Do they mist up at all? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?
Ian.

Full face or modular. Never sacrifice safety for a tiny bit of comfort imo. (And I, personally, would pretty much never wear my modular face up if I had one, unless it were over 100 degrees, cuz then you're getting into sweat in the eyes and potential fainting/heat stroke territory... just play the odds to your advantage, imo).

But the main issue is the cold wind into the eyes, which I can't avoid with a full face as I have to leave the visor open slightly to stop it misting. Is the restricted vision better or worse than crash protection?
Does anyone with the open face, with a full visor, find that they mist at all with it fully down?
All this is based around ~50mph.

Lol, do they fit over specs?
I found my old combat gigs from Afghan the other day, I might have to dig them out again and wear contacts as I doubt I can get the prescription lenses for them anymore, lol.

in some states it's illegal to ride with tinted visors, goggles, or helmet screens at night.
With a closed helmet, you can always open the visor one click, to get some air in.
There are also the modular helmets, if you don't know which one you like best. That way you can always remove one part of the helmet, making it half opened.

It depends on what's more important to you....comfort or safety? Only you can answer that.

or kiss the pavement! Some people make it a habit, to kiss the floor before they leave, so they won't need to do it later on!

yup, the modular is good for me cause i can stop for fuel and just raise the chin bar. also on warm days around town i sometimes ride with the chin bar up and the sunglass part of it down. i can scratch my nose by raising the visor--lol . i rode in the cool this morning and have to raise it at stops or it fogs up. it is heavy though so i may use the standard full face in the summer.
lotsa miles and smiles to ya

Ian Do you mean fogging? That's not necessary; get a pinlock system or use Clarity DeFog it drops.

I have an open face with a visor shield that is like a thermal pane. It has 2 sheets of shield that prevents any fogging. It is popular among snowmobile riders. It doesn't flip up but it slides up.
