2005 TGB Laser R5 scooter is not cranking. It has compression and a good spark It starts with starting fluid, but needs shots to keep it running. There is normal smoke, not loaded up.
To fix: Cleaned carb, looked ok, a few drops of water were on the bottom, but it has a small sump for that. The floats looked fine. If bad, they normally sink and flood the engine, not stave it. I pulled the vacuum and fuel line, sucked on the vacuum line, and fuel flowed fine. The fuel is fresh. I checked the intake for any obvious problems.
It has been sitting awhile before I bought it not running. When the starting fluid first cranked it, the plug fouled a couple of times, first with oil and then with water. Drats on the water ... it was under cover. I would not have bought it if I had known the engine had water around the crank, rod, bearings, etc...
Open ears to anything else that might bring life back to this very low mileage scooter. Can crank seals leak that much air? That normally just makes it run lean.
This is the first time in a long that a sitting machine has not jumped back to life, poor health or like new. Something

It has been sitting awhile before I bought it not running. Have you verified the exhaust is not obstructed, and reeds are not deficient?

I'll check the reeds. I was thinking that once up to higher rpm, the reeds stuck open ... well not fully open, but not enought time to close. It is good to check anyway. Never heard of that one ... hence why I love the massive brain power of the internet. Great video ... I love the price for the fix too. Thanks!
Exhaust ... ummm, it did not sound blocked. I over mufled a bike once, it lost power, ran hot, but was a bit quieter and taught me a little on over restricting and the sound it makes. The previous owner ran premix, but I noticed that the auto lube was still connected. She could have over oiled it. I hope so after finding water in the engine. Rust hates oil. It was clear water from what I could tell. Rusty water color would be quick death ... I would think.
Good things to check, but once the rpm was screaming, it should have made a sound besides simulating the ignition switch turned off till anouther shot of starting fluid was dispersed.
It kept running better and better ... I was so sure she was going to start running on her own ... poor or not. Something.
She said a pro mechanic tried several times to get it to run and never figured it out. After seeing the plug with 2x the gap it was supposed to have and several other goofs, I figured she took it to a non so pro mechanic. Now I'm stumped too (Temp. only).
More internet brain power ... please.

It finally came back to life. I did the old 50 cent carb tune up (Rev high and suddenly block the air inlet = instant 14.7lb sucktion). It came back to life slower than anything I have seen. At first I had to push it up the driveway, little incline, before putting my weight on it. Then in about 5 minutes she started running good. Only thing not making it perfect is there is a slight bog for a second or two if you wack the throttle open fast. Compared to my GY6, this thing kicks! It pulls all the hills 5-10mph faster, then the CDI limiter hits at an indicated 34-36mph. Butt meter says more like 30mph. It is also more quiet than the GY6. I love it! She is now running great.
$60 TGB !!! You never know with a dead engine. But now I know she is all good. Low miles too! ~2500km. I love it when things come together.
