Hey guys, came across this forum when researching scooters. My wife and I are planning on buying a couple of scooters sometime soon. She is a full time student (theatre major) and I work for UPS to pay the bills while she follows her dreams. I also build model cars and scale garages. We have decided that scooters would be the best and cheapest way to get around for our tight budget and we are both looking at TaoTao scooters. Any advice is welcome.

We have decided that scooters would be the best and cheapest way to get around for our tight budget The downside is that just the co-pay amount for an ambulance ride would probably negate any savings.

We are from Dallas TX. I have ridden motorcycles before. We both only go about 10-20 miles a day and I am not looking to go fast or anything but I would love to eventually have a modded ruckus or zuma as a toy but thats just not in the budget at the moment. As far as people that have a problem with TaoTao, could you be more specific on what was wrong with them?

Hey, welcome crawley. I've got 2,100 miles on my TaoTao (which has the label "VIP Future Champion" slapped on) CY50-A. The quality of the parts does seem pretty low. If you don't want to do a lot of upgrades or mechanical work, I don't know if a Chinese scooter is a good choice for you. Mine is down right now for only the 2nd time, other than a few hard starts. And when my part gets here, if it fixes it, then both times would have proved to be my fault for rooster-tailing through flood waters during heavy rain in my area (the part is the CDI). If it's not that, then I could have a major engine problem on my hands. I got mine from a dealer for $900 fully assembled and PDI done, but I've put a couple hundred back in it already just to get some quality parts. If it does turn out that it's the CDI, then I have to say this scoot has served me well so far. If it is something major, then I won't have much faith. Also, the rear tire is worn down and ready to be replaced which is a little premature at 2k miles. If you can afford it, and you want more than 35mph, I'd advise a Japanese 150 or larger. If I were starting over now, I'd buy a lightly used Japanese bike over a new Chinese bike--their quality is gradually improving but has not arrived yet, imo.

Is there any good scooter than can be had for close to $1000. I have heard good and bad about taotao but most of the bad was more about the customer service and receiving beat up bikes. some of the research i had done made it seem that if you went through and replaced the hoses and a bit of hardware they were pretty decent. I am looking to get something more zuma/ruckus style (150cc preferably) and my wife likes the more classic 50cc "granny style" (her words not mine)
