Well now that you've re-posted the quote again, there's nothing religious about it. It doesn't mention God or religion.
It's wisdom.

You know, when this thread started, I thought, "Way to go, snugglebunny. Way to stand up for yourself." I wasn't much on the gun, but at your size, I can understand it. But now, all those psychology classes in school are screaming at me that you have lost your stability. Maybe it's just an episode (they can last a week or two, not just moments) but you've detached from the mainstream here. You're swinging at everything in your path. Let the petty quotes from any text go. Be as supportive of the first amendment as you are of the second. The forum will come after out-of-place posts--you don't have to be the police, judge, jury, executioner, and anti-religion prophet. Let's get back to scooters, eh?

Definite thread rage here. I've heard that people show their true selves within the metallic safety of their automobiles. One may be polite and tolerant when physically mingling with others, like in a supermarket, but within the vehicular fortress, many are quick to lash out at anything they perceive as inept. I believe that Internet trolls are aggressive for the same reason: they feel safe in doing so and are being their real selves in those moments. I've been both, and decided it was cowardly and that I desired to be a different person.
As far as dealing with people who put me in danger me when I'm riding, either out of ineptitude or artificially fortified aggression, I preach what danno advises, but temperamentally, I'm much more spiritually in tune with wutzthedeal. The enlightened philosopher in me is nowhere to be found when someone has come close to inflicting bodily harm. It's the moment. Motorized bullies need to be deterred by those who are willing to help them remember that inside, they're merely insecure little people. I've been fortunate thus far, delivering that message with an "are you serious" challenging gesture. In each case, the infractor has wilted. (Truly intrepid bullies don't come at you with vehicles.) Guys like wutzthedeal may or may not be impelled by ego, but if the aggressive cager thinks twice next time, others will be safer on account.

The way your are able to disagree and agree with any portion of this train wreck of a thread is admirable. It may be the closest thing to the truth in this thread. I agree whole-heartedly with you. I often give the "are you serious" gesture too. I try to be nice though really...

Guys like wutzthedeal may or may not be impelled by ego, but if the aggressive cager thinks twice next time, others will be safer on account. Well stated. I've got no ego in the game, though. Gave that up a long time ago. But my prevailing need to keep things just that are within my locus of control has never dampened; had it since I was a kid. It's not, "Hey, respect ME!" screaming out when I say something. I've been freefall skydiving twice from 12,500 feet up, so I obviously don't take my life too seriously. It's the same with the books I wrote; in the back of my mind, the measure of failure is outward--it is those other people (in the case of my writing, it's readers) who must be pleased in order for me to have reached my goal. So, closely related, I can say I don't write for myself, and I don't fight for myself. If you saw how many short guys came after me in bars once they got 10-feet-tall and bulletproof, and how all I ever did was block their shots til they tired out, you'd know. They all wanted to fight the tall guy after some drinks. I somewhat disagree with people being "the real them" while drunk or protected by a fortress or anonymity--it just shows how they handle power or lack of accountability for their actions, or the perception thereof. Who a real person is must be measured by the grand total of all of their actions, I think. For me, I am prone to rooting for underdogs, which probably led to my dislike for bullies. So when I say something to a driver, I'm not even thinking about me. My heart rate doesn't even rise (ask my girlfriend--I'm the only person that can ride with her--she drives like a maniac, though careful around peds and smaller vehicles, and it doesn't bother me a bit... for whatever reason, it takes a lot to get me really excited). I'm thinking about what's right. I'm intent on letting them know that they aren't the only people on the road, and I don't care if they have a shotgun in a rack in their back windshield--I'm gonna talk to them if they do something intentionally or recklessly just because they would unlikely get hurt or because they have no respect for anything smaller than them. If you are right, though, and we become a different type of being while in a car... an animal, without civilized thought and behavior... then "cager" turns out to be a perfect word!

wutzthedeal ... I'm only 5'7" and look every bit like the schoolteacher I am - glasses and all - so I reflect on my motives a lot. I don't look like a former Infantry NCO at all, so I'm always surprised when I'm able to defuse tense situations. I did solo accelerated free fall, too. It's an incredible sensation, isn't it? Don't know if I'll ever do it again, though. Update: Just noticed your take on "cager" ... yes, good word.

I am ex-Air Force but only reached E-4 (non-NCO) before I got out after 4 years, and I look more like the Jolly Green Giant XD. When I get mad at drivers, they ask if I prefer French-Style over Kitchen Cut.

Snuggle,
That quote was not religious, just because a quote comes from a religious text does not make it a religious statement.
Has it been the no man gets to heaven except.... that would be religious.
I think we can all agree that any of the religious writings will have excellent food for thought when it comes down to the way people live.
Time to stop the friction.
