I need a new helmet. I know it's going to be white and I know it's not going to be cheap. I would like to get a modular helmet since I live here in Florida and I like the idea of opening it up when at lights and such to cool down some. I also have another reason for wanting to wear a modular as I will sometimes use my bike as a delivery vehicle (http://www.2smallerwheels.blogspot.com/2012/02/putting-scooter-to-work-part-two.html).
My question is how many of you wear modular's. I've heard that they actually make road noise worse. That the snaps don't always work correctly, etc. I would rather here it from riders I trust than reviews in some magazine some where.

I use a Shoei modular. I don't think it's really any nosier than the full face I used to have, as for lights, they generally change too fast to go through the trouble of flipping it up and down (I just use the visor) But for delivery purposes (were you want too see the customer face to face) it would work just fine.

i have a IV2 modular full face its great stop for gas, dont have to take the whole thing off just pop the front.
same with getting a drink or a smoke
just pop the front, dont have to go through the hassle of taking it all off
no increased noise, that i can tell, with any other full face, but i dont own a traditional ff

Nolan (I believe) N-100. I got the modular because I didn't want to muck about with taking off my glasses, putting on the helmet, putting on my glasses. Repeat when removing.
'bunny's right that it's great at gas stations. I would think it'd be perfect for deliveries too. Can't tell you about increased noise or not as it's the only helmet I've owned. But it doesn't seem all that noisy or loud in it when I'm going 45-50 on open roads.

howdy, i use the scorpion exo900 and notice it is a lot heavier than my other full face. the advantage is, as mentioned before,is that i can leave my glasses on while removing, or installing my head. and the fueling without having to remove it is good also. it is warmer than my other when riding in the cold.
lotsa miles and smiles to ya

Golly shalom', you have an installable head? That's pretty neat! Can I get one too? Does it typically work better than the original? If I get one in not-blonde, will I gain mechanical abilities?
;D ;D ;D
(sorry, just could NOT resist!)

Modular helmets are fine but you need to be aware. Regardless of the brand you want to look for metal hardware especially the hooks and latch pins that lock it shut. A fully removable liner that is washable not just the cheek pads. Good ventilation and potentially dual visors. The Built Solar from Cycle Gear meets those specs and should still be on sale for $99. It may even come with a spare outer face shield.

I looked at the Bilt helmets and they seem to be low in quality

howdy kat
yup, i actually wrote it that way to be a little funny, but it is logical if you are holding your helmet, and looking at it, it feels like you are going to install your head ----where?
was looking at the vega modular this week and now see the recall mentioned here. they seemed light and neatly designed but i didn't notice any interior sunshade which my exo has and i use to reduce glare. i also use it at slow speeds with the chin bar up and the interior sunshade down on hot days which is nice and a feature not seemingly mentioned above.

Anyone have any personal testimonies on the Gmax for only $130? I'm considering this one or the Scorpion 900 $130 here...

And it came with smoked and clear face shields w/no tools required to change (although it can be challenging to change them because it requires perfect slot alignment). Almost six months and no malfunctions yet, not to mention the Amazon testimonials (if they are to be believed) include several instances of the helmet working well in accidents. I was looking at the modular on Amazon, but right now, I just say screw it and go into stores and gas stations w/my face shield up. Nobody has said anything yet.
