A few days ago, while stopped at a red light, I saw a lady in her minivan drive through the intersection (on the green light) never looking up from her phone. I always look before I enter intersections even when I have the green light.
Another observation / question: Why do some shoppers come out of stores, get in their cars, then immediately get on the phone and drive away? Be careful this Holiday season.

i know this is gonna PO alot of people because it effects your rights
but i think they need to make a device that makes cell phone, iphones, tablets inoperative while the vehicle is running pull into a parking spot, turn it off, answer/make your call.
save a lot of lives

Screw that, just get rid of automobiles completely. The car has singlehandedly destroyed the world.

If they made the interior of a car a cell phone/wi-fi dead spot anytime the car is in motion it would help but you would have to retro-fit older cars which is an issue, and it's not really fair to passengers who want to text and talk. They would also have to have a device integrated into it that communicates with a central computer all the time telling it that the system is functioning and report your car to the authorities should it fail otherwise you could get some electronic whiz to simply disable it. I don't think the public is ready for that sort of intrusion into our private lives but give it time for the body count to increase and there will be a group similar to M.A.D.D. called Mothers Against Driving And Texting (M.A.D.A.T.) They will lobby congress and they will pass another law to save us from ourselves. blah blah blah In the mean time they should just make the penalty for the first offense a mandatory 30 days impounding of your car, 10 days in jail and $500 fine and I bet you wouldn't see it very often.

The same issue as todays cellphones happened in the 1940's-1950's when they first incorporated a radio in common people's cars. At least back then, people had the intelligence not to change channels while driving, or not have the radio on at all! I never pick up my cellphone while driving, especially not in the city. Even on the highway, there are some crazy M#therF#@ers (and sad to say usually bikers, CBR-racing type riders) that go inbetween cars without looking. If I where on the cellphone, and decided to switch lanes, these guys, who usually drive with nothing on safety gear on, but a helmet, but who are driving 90-120MPH on the highway, zigzagging, will be pavement paste; and then it will be my fault for not seeing him, because I was on the phone? It would be, if the guy would keep himself to the speed limit, and would be a defensive driver! However, an accident usually happens when more than one person is not doing what they are supposed to do! The least I can do is be attentive to those crazy @sses out there, and satisfy myself in the knowledge that these guys usually end up in an accident somewhere, and decide not to drive bikes anymore, making the roads safer again!

Screw that, just get rid of automobiles completely. The car has singlehandedly destroyed the world. Agreed! I wish I could "opt out" of the driving scene, but I still have to go to work. What I notice is...Get off work, get on the freeway and go 52mph??? Why....Because everybody's on that damn phone.

A 10 inch steel spike in the centre of every steering wheel would solve the problem: you can text and drive if you like, but if you bump into something.....
