I don't have a strap wrench, so I did this using a bicycle tire, worked great. I am a bike mechanic so I used a nice folding one I had laying around but you could probably use a wire bead one too. tread side in. Attachments:

I know this is an old post but that is a damned good idea LOL.
I used to use those non-slip mats like you buy for the kitchen. They are great to just hold things down while you tighten or loosen. I like your idea here though because on those bell housings holding them down with bare hands while taking them off is not generally possible.
If you use those no slip mats and both hands while another person uses a torque wrench you can get em off LOL
