This device will make your brake light flash for a few seconds and then come on steady when you apply the brake. It will do this every time you apply the brake and the flashing will hopefully draw more attention from drivers behind you. The flash rate and length of time it flashes are both adjustable. Here is the website with the circuit: bates70.wordpress.com/2010/10/30/brake-light-flasher/Parts are not hard to find nor expensive, but you can no longer count on Radio Shack, they have all but turned their back on the electronics hobbyist. I etched the circuit board but you can do point to point wiring if you like. I have also made circuit boards so I can install this in my cars and motorhome. Michael

That is illegal in my state and many others as well, proceed at your own risk.

We have opted for additional "flashing" LED pods with our scooters.
When wired into the brake switch they are a 2nd set of LEDS that rapidly strobe from both sides of the brake lights.
3 lights are better than 1! =)
On another note the Bintelli's we received have incredibly bright LED brake lights. Wonder if there is a way to strobe them...

Section S5.5.10 of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 108, Lamps reflective devices and associated equipment, establishes the wiring requirements for lighting equipment in use, and requires that all lamps be wired to be steady burning, unless otherwise stated. All stoplamps must be steady burning when in use. Steady means free from change or variation. This means that they must not modulate, flash, or vary in size, area, intensity or appearance.

That is illegal in my state and many others as well, proceed at your own risk. This may not be entirely true. Some states have outlawed brake lights which flash continuously because the flashing may trigger a seizure in people who are epileptic, but lights which flash briefly like this circuit does are not outlawed. The flashing only lasts 1-3 seconds. In the USA, the flasher was approved for use in 50 States. In Canada the flasher and headlight modulators were approved in 2002 for use in all provinces, providing the brake light flasher has a maximum number of flashes of 8 or less. Other than that, there are *NO* regulations for a brake light flasher at this time (June 2010), not in the USA and not in Canada. Michael.

Just FYI the young lady who said they are illegal is a police officer I don't know how qualified the nay Sayers are to say nay but I do know if the police think its illegal they will pull you over. I personally use the same model as katastroff I like it because it is infinitely adjustable and it can sense when a car is approaching from the rear

At least in my state, flashing brake lights are legal for motorcycles (but not cars).
From ORS 816.100:
(11) Brake lights for motorcycles may flash intermittently, provided that the brake lights do not override the rear turn signal function. [1983 c.338 §458 (7); 1985 c.16 §240 (7); 1985 c.69 §1 (7); 1985 c.71 §4 (7); 1985 c.393 §13 (7); 1985 c.420 §6 (7); 1997 c.492 §2; 2003 c.158 §24]

I honestly don't know if they are legal here I do see a lot of them and the chevy dealer ship here adds a similar device to all its new cars. I assume its legal I'd be careful in CT though
