Bought a Tao Tao from Power Sports in Dallas. When it got here, put the wheel on, started it and went for a ride. Went 3/4 mile and it quit and would not start. Pushed it home and when it cooled started again, did this for 20 miles, 3/4 miles at a time. Power Sports sent a carb, not the problem, I bought enough parts to almost build one. Now they won't even return my calls. I knew it was made in China and should have known better. I thought for 750 if it went a couple years and then to the junk yard OK, but 20 miles. WOW

Next time this happens is your small window to identify what it could be.
If possible when the scooter will NOT start check the spark plug for spark.
Also pull your gas cap to see if your tank is not venting like it should.
Please be more specific in your next post and list the part/work you've done already. Is it a 50/150 cc? Is it a secret 63cc?

Thanks but I did all that. I think it is the rings seizing. The worst part is getting NO dealer help. Hard to make a silk purse out of a sows ear.

Well you open a thread about the damn thing dieing and not starting and bash everyone and everything. BUT HERE IS THE THING if you give us some DETAIL information on WHAT you have done to it or HOW IT ACTS and at what point etc.. We here can get it running provided you get your hands a little dirty.
How can we help you if we do not know the details. Different things the scoot is doing point to certain problems so the more detail you can give we can diagnose the culprit and you can then fix it.
Hard to start, Starts but bogs, runs but suddenly sputters and dies or it just dies like turning the key off etc..
But just from your first entry which has just a HINT of the problem IF its a 4 Stroke I would suspect the Valves are tight and after it gets hot you loose compression and it putters out and will not crank back up until it cools off a little. Wile

I am not bashing anyone except the TaoTao. It is a 4 cycle 49cc brand new, starts hard, runs nice for 3/4 mile and stops, won't restart. I am an ASE Mechenic for 24 yrs, and feel I should'nt have to mess with a new scooter for weeks and weeks to go for a ride. If I offended anyone I am sorry.

Welcome to our world........new Tao Tao's are not gas-n-go scooters. About 3-4hrs of prep time is necessary to make them road worthy.....

I'm a mechanic too but these little motors can be quirky. What you are describing is something I've seen happen in a similar fashion. In my previous experience the culprit was valve lash was set too tight. The motor would start up and run and rev to 10K RPM no problem But once you sat on it and took a short drive the engine would bog down and stop running. When the head heated up it changed the lash enough to hold the valves killing compression and removing all power an ability to run. Widen your valve gap to 3-4 thousands for intake and exhaust and see if it's night and day. This is something that should be checked on all these scooters before they are sold, but you can bet your bottom dollar the majority of sellers won't do it for you.

Could also be the fuel petcock not working properly and you are running out of fuel. Could be dozens of issues.
If you buy a bicycle off the internet and the pedals fall off when you ride it, do you curse Schwinn or do you blame yourself for not properly tightening all the screws and bolts?

Complete PDI was done, one should know better than to buy ANY products from China. I don't think they know you should put some carbon in steel. When I bought it I expected a couple thousand miles out of it and toss it in the junk. If I have to play with it everytime I want to go to work it is not of much use. Attachments:

I have the same scoot, the only problems I have ever had is that my total needed a valve adjustment at 4000 km. Like others have mentioned you have to get your hands dirty. Adjust your valves. I have a atm50. I bought mine from a local dealer so I didn't have to mess with adjusting anything out of the box, but you aren't the first person to post this exact same problem. Use the search to see what other users have done.

The PDI may have been performed, perhaps even by you. But I will still question the quality of the valve adjustment as a starting point. If you are interested in another possibility you could have a fuel pump issue. Perhaps you've already tested that?

I have a tao tao 50cc future champ, the only problem I had from the start was when ny spark pkug was originally put in they cross threded it. So when I went to go put in the ngk I was screwed! Old plug ripped alk the threads out. Decided to install. The 100cc bbk. Still have a lot of extra to add but as of now I just might have fastest 50cc scoot in town
