hey everyone. im new to the whole scooter scene but im an automotive apprentice so im fairly good with mechanics and turning a wrench. im trying to find a used, reliable and fast 50cc scooter to play around with. i know this has probably been asked a million times but ive been having trouble finding some information from google.
so far my top 3 choices aprilia sr50 (none locally), kymco super 9 and the derbi atlantis bullet.
i know the cream of the crop is the sr50 and it has the most potential, however there are none for sale in my area unless i go new and im not prepared to spend that much much at this point in time.
my 2nd choice would be the super 9, from what ive read its fast, reliable and has a tun of aftermarket support. i can also choose from a few different liquid cooled ones locally for around $2000 (2007, 10,000km) or a bit less.
the latest scoot ive discovered is the derbi atlantis. from what ive read its also quite fast, however it looks like its suspension and breaking systems arnt quite up to par with the super 9. its also available locally for $1500 (2002 with 500km) or less so its a good amount cheaper then the super 9.
my main question would be if there would be much difference in acceleration and top speed between the super 9 or the derbi Atlantis, in a stock de-restricted form? any suggestions on what would be the better choice? if it makes a difference im about 6' tall and 220lbs...
ive also looked a little into the keeway f-act but i dont think this one is quite as reliable or as fast as the others? its in the $700-$1000 (2008, 4000km) range locally so its quite cheap.
once again im just trying to find the fastest most enjoyable scooter in the sub $2000 price range used. i also wouldnt mind putting in some wrench time to rebuild/modify for a bit of extra speed either.

the main reason im lookin AT 50cc's is because my gf doesnt have a license and i said id get her a scooter she can rip around on. where i live you only need a learners permit for a 50cc scooter, and she has absolutely no desire to get a motorcycle license, which is required for anything over 50cc... i want a fast one so i can have fun on it occasionally ripping around town. unfortunately 50cc is my only option at the moment. if it was completely up to me id be getting a 500cc sportbike

If you mod a 50cc, you've stepped into the realm of a required MC endorsement
So It's illegal either way... May as well get the 150 :-p

Until you have about $300-400 in mods and a few hours of labor on that 2-stroke you aren't going to be ripping anything. They can be pretty zippy though depending on the load. However you seem to be mistaken that a 50cc is anything close to fast.

When I say fast I mean fast for a 50cc scooter. Being able to do 80+km/h on flats and around 100 on hills with some decent acceleration would be sweet. I don't care about making it illegal with a 70cc kit.what's important is what its listed as on paper. It's not like a cop is going to rip it apart and measure the bore and stroke. Like I said I have no problem spending some cash and modding it. I just want the best 50cc starting platform...

I'd get her a 50cc scooter, then get yourself a 150cc or 250cc scooter or whatever 500cc sportbike you want. She probably won't ever change her mind about getting a motorcycle license so don't let that stop you from getting what you want. Besides maybe money stopping you. I was glad I got a 150cc scooter, I got my license after practicing at the dmv course. If I was to get a new scooter or m/c, I'd get a 250cc and go 65mph+ with no mods. I'd buy a 250cc chinese scooter from an online seller for 1600-$2000. www.mxmotorsports.us/Roketa-p/mc-54-250.htmwww.mxmotorsports.us/MC-D250RTC-250cc-Full-size-Motorcycle-p/mc-d250rtc.htmI bought my scooter from them for $1,000. I recommend them because I had no issues from them other than it takes 2-3 weeks to get a Manufactures Certificate of Origin (MCO) and bill of sale to title and register your bike. PDI and tinker with it and know you don't have to struggle spending time and money to get a few mph starting from a 50cc scooter. Unless that's what you like to do and enjoy it. Logically people save the most money getting what they want from the get-go, instead of getting what you don't exactly want then trying to upgrade it. The money you spend upgrading to get you to 40-45mph on a 50cc 4-stroke you can have out of the crate on a 150cc and more. Maybe if you have a 150cc scooter and she has a 50cc scooter, she can alway change her mind and get her license. She can just ride with a permit on a 150cc with you too.

I have confirmed that Yellow scooters are the fastest.
Actually, little depends on the brand of scooter. Some have larger frames so some are heavy and some lighter. There are long case and short case 50cc with different size wheels. These differences effect the speed of the scooter as well as the riders huge butt.
If the roads you travel have speed limits up to 45mph, a 50cc is a blast. Most mods dont drastically effect the top speed. They add a lot of power so you can react in traffic. Now I cruise around bumping half throttle instead of tucking behind the handlebars at full throttle for the same speed.

Go with the keeway it has more after market products 140qmb then any other scooters except the 139qmb. super 9 does have after market parts but not many and they are expensive get the keeway and save some money and be able 50-55 no problem with some mods i dont know if the f-act has the ten or 12 in tire but i would stick to any Chinese 2t with the 12 in tires more room and rides better and they will ride just has quick has the sr50 and the other you mention. My vento r4 beat a zuma 125 and chinese 150 just the other day and i have moded the tranny and have stage 6 street race 70cc kit and dusted them both no problem

if it goes 50 -55 might as well get a 150 almost the same speed id imagine if you get pulled over going 50 on a 50cc it would get impounded and you would be in a hell of alot of trouble just saying

he wants a fifty and a fast fifty so i advising him on what he wants. You have many valid points with the law and maybe being illegal after mods but that is what us 50cc lover do mod to the max

Its cheap to be legal an enjoy your " motorcycle " class scooter after mods instead of trying to zoom with a moped tag . In Sc there are pulling over those that go faster than 30 MPH with a moped tag . I had a lot of hate from cagers with a moped tag but none with a MC tag . Hopefully I will have a racing pipe and jets for my 2T and zoom around those on a 4T scooter and cars

You have many valid points with the law and maybe being illegal after mods but that is what us 50cc lover do mod to the max thanks Teddy. im considering the f-act as i could get the scooter and probably all the add on parts for the same price as the super 9. although i was looking forward to the liquid cooling and disc brakes of the super 9. anyone have experience with a 2001 derbi predator? theres one locally for a good price with under 1000km on it. this scooter would also be liquid cooled with front and rear disc brakes. seller says hes clocked it at 78km/h (48mph). only problem from what i can tell is they are fairly rare and i cant seem to find many aftermarket parts for them. anyone know any good websites where i could find some performance parts for either the kymco, keeway or the derbi? itd be nice to weigh the mods i could afford with buying price to determine my best bargain...

Wasn't trying to be mean with my post, it is a challenge to pep up a 50cc. I own a 2011 tao tao VIP 63cc. The way I have it tuned right now it will run around 53on GPS. That's on flat black top, that's with 7gram sliders in it,but it's not a stick of dynamite on take off. Yea! That's my challenge. I would like to try a NOS kit one of these days!! Maybe! LOL!

My 2002 Kymco Yup 50, unrestricted with 6.5 wieghts goes gps verified 48 mph. That's fast as freak for a 50cc.
A Yup is what is now called a Sting. It has the same wheels and engine as a Super 9.

anyone know the difference between a pro series 70cc bbk and a race series one? im assuming the pro is more reliable, but how much life should one expect from a race kit? one website i went to said pro series should hit 14-16hp with supporting mods and a race series should hit 16-19hp with supporting mods... i wouldnt mind having to replace the piston and rebuild the engine every year or 2, but if the entire cylinder would have to be replaced its probably not really worth while...

Single ring has less friction so it can get a higher RPM than a 2 ring but not last as long . Cylinder should be good and single ring may wear out and need replacing . If I had the money I would bore the case to use this www.spmotostore.com/product_p/tfast004.htm as I have a place for a radiator to do a LC conversion
