Okay guys, I read through the threads about chains and padlocks and am confused. Question: Is there any general consensus on what's the best ? I mean, what is the ultimate affordable security set-up?
Yeah, I always just threw a regular chain and padlock around my old moped but my scooter was expensive and I live in a bad area now, lol, so I need the ultimate in security.
Thanks

If you value your scoot, get the best lock money can buy. I have a Kryptonite Forgettaboutit chain and lock. Its tungdon steel. Bolt cutters won't work on this chain. Anything bolt cutters can cut, you scoot is vulnerable to theft. Only buy this kinda lock. Trust me, you will always walk out and your scoot will be there. Theifs tried 3 weeks ago and took neighbors scoot. Why? He had some chain with a padlock. They just cut chain and took scoot. They tried to break mine but could not. My scoot was there in the morning, his was gone.

I have had 4 new ones stolen within 100 feet of the shop....sitting out with "For Sale' signs...in broad daylight!..last year and year before....when I sold new scoots. Now just do repairs and sell parts. Anyway...steering locked...and lock through the front disc brake rotor. They simply picked them up....put them in a truck...and hauled ss...never recovered...cops won't put out the word to look out for them. Stopped one guy to tell him his looked kewl...and where did he get it...I wanted one.He said he would sell it...gave me the his name..number...address...and I copied the VIN. Got home and VIN matched the MCO I had for it. Called it in 3 times that week! They never even went over to check it out. So Kryptonite that sucker to a pole or something..as he stated above..they can't cut that....but the weakest link being the lock for it...they can cut with bolt cutters... A few months later... was in town....saw it the back of a truck heading east on 109th st. Pulled up to a cop sitting at the fire dept and told him the scoot they had was stolen..it was mine..and showed him the MCO I keep with me in case I saw it again...he just sat there...as they drove away... ...what a complete lazy ss...

I use Massterlock disc locks on the brake rotors and a Masterlock ubolt through the wheels to a fat cable when traveling and massive chain at home

How about this lock..it's an "American" brand lock. I did some time in the DOC awhile back and was on maintenance, and always noticed that this was the brand of locks that the DOC used on gates, etc. I asked my boss why and he said that "American" brand locks were the toughest and hardest to cut. Any one know about these? I like the one in the picture: Attachments:

I guarantee you there is no sure way to reasonably chain one up - big thing now is to simply spray your chain with liquid nitrogen (or air conditioner freon) whack it with a hammer and it shatters - yes even tungsten steel ! Quick and easy. They don't even carry bolt cutters anymore.
The best bet I've seen is the disc brake lock AND a $100. GPS tracker ($12. per month for the service) hide the unit on the bike and you will know where it is 24/7. They run a long time off a scooter battery too. One guy in Chicago had his bike stolen twice - same day - at a bike show. Found it himself the first time and sent the police the second time - it was $5K bike so his security investment was a sound one.

My neighborhood isnt so great but I dont lock mine up aside from the steering lock, but if its a parts scavenger thats lurking around then theres no protecting your bike. People around here wont steal your bike but they'll steal anything and everything else on it. Had my mirrors stolen twice

Yeah, after researching this thing I think I'm gonna go with a Kryptonite Forgettaboutit chain/lock, a xena disc lock/w alarm, and the GPS tracker...unless someone has a better idea. Can't get all of this stuff at once, but I'm gonna get it as I can. I ride and park in some shady places on a daily basis so I'm going all out with this stuff!! Thanks

Get a front disc brake lock, and tie up the back wheel to a pole with a lock like this: It's sold on Amazon for less than $20, and gets many good reviews! Forget about scissors, or pliers or even most bolt cutters are no match for this, thanks to it's solid hardened steel core!
