New Linhai Aeolus 2008 blue smoke only on start-up Hi New member as of today. In April bought a new Aeolus 300, followed the boards advice & removed all the OEM fluids before the first start-up coolant (looked like thick mud with sand) engine oil, gear oil and brake fluid had water drops in it . Followed the break in as stated in the manual. After 24 miles on the bike the starter would only crank 1 time over an struggle. Let go of the starter button and start it again would crank normal with a puff of blue oil smelling smoke from the exhaust. Now with 280 miles on the bike does this every time you go to restart it. To me it sounds like oil is seeping into the crankcase and is causing Hydraulic lock. I called Jim at Sunright and was not very helpful Hope one of you smart guys on the board can give me advice

uh-oh. Only 24 miles on the bike? I wonder if the valve stem seals could have deteriorated from sitting so long.

I hope not I was given a list of repair shops from Riders wholesale ( THAT WAS A BAD MISTAKE) called the whole list nobody will work on it. I live S.W Lower MI Jim at Sunlight wont supply any parts until a shop will look at it He said since I bought it online I'm on my own. and Riders Wholesale will only pay 22.50 labor ( and reimburse me later that's a joke) rate at a shop all the labor rates our at least 70.00 so it looks like I'm in a bad spot

Bird, if you don't have too much oil, then I suspect the battery is weak from storage. It's not hard to remove the seat again so I would get a helper with a volt meter to get the available voltage reading during cranking. The 300 has a lot of draw during cranking with all the lights being on at the same time. I added a volt meter to my Mainstreet and it's common if the bike has been setting unused for a while for the meter to show only 10.5 available cranking volts before you press the starter, and I have a new battery that I installed last year. I believe the smoke is because the engine is still not broken in and from excess fuel because a cold engine.

Hi...normally blue smoke on start is from oil flowing past the valve stem seal on the intake valve. When you start, that oil is burned and gives you the puff of smoke. I would put some miles on the scoot and keep a watchful eye on the oil level. It may clear itself up with some usuage and some miles put on the scoot. Also charge the battery. I thougt I had a problem with my starter and the problem was a battery not fully charged. I also use a battery tender, which keeps the battery in top form. Remember white smoke is water....blue smoke is oil and black smoke is fuel. I just turned 7500 miles (China Miles) on my scoot. Enjoy the ride.

Mine does the same thing on initial start of the day except no smoke, just the same kick back on the first compression stoke upon hitting the starter button. I eventually found a solution. Get the starter rolling the engine with the kickstand down and put it up as it is rolling (this turns on the ignition) and mine will not kick back. On my scooter this shuts the ignition off and the starter will still turn the engine. That is the only way I found I could run the starter with the ignition off. The other thing that works for me is to open the throttle wide open once or twice before trying to start it. My carb will squirt fuel into the intake as one opens and closes the throttle effectively priming it. I have no idea if all scooters do that or not. At any rate that method also works for me and it is easier then retracting the kickstand with the starter rolling the engine. Don't prime it with a hot engine though as it will flood the engine. I wouldn't worry much about the blue smoke on start up unless it is burning an excessive amount of oil. As someone said the blue smoke usually comes from bad valve stem seals. Bad seals will also puff blue smoke after an extended idling and then blipping the throttle.

Hi Thanks for the replies I now have 300 miles on the scoot same thing with the big puff of blue smoke at start up .as for the battery its fine I can start it a 1 min later and starts normal. I will keep a eye on the oil and just ride as is. I have one question I would like to change the fuel filter but I cant get to the top of the filter hose to remove even with the lower kick panel removed.

Getting to the fuel filter is a pain. Check the Linhai threads. I posted one entitled "Attn: Linhai owners" or something like that. There's a thread around here somewhere with all kinds of pic and tips for the Linhai. Mine did that "kick-back" thing on start as well. I never worried about it. Just pressed the starter again and away it went. Never had the blue-smoke thing, but I bought mine on '08, so it hadn't been sitting around long.
