I've always thought it would be fun to have a helmet cam. Not because my drives are fun or even because I see interesting things. Mostly I wanted it for the just in case I get into an accident or happen to see one occur. I'm a cheapskate mostly because I have a very small budget to work with. I did a bit of research and found I would be happy with a gum stick camera. They are quite cheap (about $12) and have OK resolution and frame rate (720x480@30fps). Also, they're tiny and easy to install. I bought mine on ebay. This camera is small enough I could fit it inside the helmet after removing a little bit of the helmet foam. I realize this weakens the helmet and I will die in a horrific way so lets move past that part. The sound is not very good, with the wind and engine sounds overwhelming the little microphone. I would like to try to improve it somehow. More pics on my blog: jonglauser.blogspot.com/2012/06/helmet-cam.html I'm surprised that I have caught a couple of incidents already! The one I'll post here is at an intersection I cross every day and have seen an unusual number of accidents at. I fear it every time I cross through. The majority of traffic comes down the hill from the right and turns right or is on coming and turns left. Usually they ignore the light because 90% of traffic takes that route. I'm one of the odd-balls going straight through. I saw it coming and avoided an incident.

For others curious . . eBay searchAdvisory . . most descriptions state "no memory included with this item".

Decent picture quality for an inexpensive camera. Sounds like your flying a crop duster.

The microphone is so saturated the audio is just terrible for this application. I added an 8GB class 4 micro SD card that cost me less than $10 on Amazon. I'm trying to get a pic of how I mounted it to my helmet.. gotta find a (different) camera .

After something like that I check and see if the headlights are on when the motor is running. I have caught a blown fuse a few times over the years.

Left a comment on your blog. I really like your idea. I currently use a go pro on a chest mount (I know if I'm in an accident, It's gonna embed in my chest and I'll be like Ironman). Sound from the camera is a bit harsh. My solution isn't cheap but works pretty well. I use a voice recorder with a label mic under my gear, then sync up the sound in Final Cut Pro. Not the cheapest solution but the results are pretty good.

Nice! I havne't recorded anything too interesting since that video I posted.. but if it's not recording I wont get anything, right?
I've been watching mordeth13 on youtube. Actually his videos inspired me to get my own camera. Apparently he has a couple cameras mounted to his scooter and ninja that are there just for accident recording.

I was just using my cell phone strapped to my chest with a belt, only because I don't care if it looks retarded. But you guys talked me into one; I'm gonna use this as a side-mount with a velcro patch; because it's a key-fob camera, I can use it for just about anything else w/o being noticed. www.amazon.com/Keychain-Camera-Hidden-Video-Recorder/dp/B008LQDSQI

It's a cheat actually.... I don't use the audio from the camera. I use a voice recorder with a lapel mic under my gear. The gear keeps the wind noise away. Then I sync the sound in final cut pro then kill the audio from the camera.
That video was a test to see how well it would work.

I think if you're having a windshield, putting the cam behind it, might give best results audio wise...
