I used to have two '78 Puch Maxi-Luxe mopeds. Inherited them from my grandparents. Fixed them up, got addicted to riding, eventually sold them and got my Tank Touring 150. Mopeds just weren't practical for my neighborhood, but the Tank is.
Over the weekend though, I picked up an '86 Honda XR100r. It's more fun than any of the other bikes/scoots/mopeds I've had.

I currently have a 1978 Columbia Commuter that runs great BUT it's a dog like most mopeds, I had a Puch that did 50 all day long but that was modded out.

More states now require that you take get the same hands-on training and licensing for a 50cc, pedal-able moped as you would for a full sized motorcycle. That has really put a damper on the sale of 50cc mopeds and scooters.

I had several Puch , Garrelli , Motobecane and Tomos pedal mopeds as a teen . try www.mopedarmy.com they are more moped instead of scooters like here . I had flashbacks seeing Honda Urban Express and Yamaha Towneys as I had both as well along with a Honda Elite and Spree as my first two scooters

My first ride was a 1974 Puch Maxi when I was 15. It looked exactly like this one I found online

About 4 months ago I was heading home on my scoot from work and I saw a veritable gang of guys riding old Tomos peds. Had to be at least 20 of them riding in a nice tight group around town, so apparently at least here in Wilmington NC, theres a bunch of folks riding them and even having some sort of semi annual ride,so they likely have a riders group or scooter club. You are definitely not the only one kicking it old skool like that.

Todays scooters are safer than scooters made 20 yrs ago. ABS is pretty standard where as that was not invented 25 yrs ago. Older does look good and cheaper but dependability, I am sticking with new and newer.

While my buddy kept working on his engine to keep it running, I just made sure I had oil in the tank.

Most bikes still don't have ABS; they have a pressure limiting valve that reduces the likelihood of locking your front wheel on dry tar. The first thing I'd do with a Fake ABS is get rid of it. Useless crap and just one more thing to go wrong.

I used to have one when I was 12, it was great fun when it ran. Today I just passed one on the road while riding, it was having a rough time making it up a steep hill by my house though.

I'm not so sure about them being safer, I can tell you with fair certainty my 1990 Tomos Targa TTLX was a lot safer than the Chinese scooter I'm riding now. It had better brakes, much better suspension, handled a lot better and was much slower.
I rode it so much I wore out two A3 engines and one A35, many wheel bearings and had to re-cover and re-foam the seat. Those Grimeca drums had tons of stopping power when properly adjusted and the 80 watt magneto was nice, using a 50 watt halogen 1156 for a headlight bulb! I really miss mopeds that were actually built in Europe with quality like that.
I also always found it cool that it had a speedometer made by VDO, the same company that made them for some of the older super cars. And that gauge was spot on too unlike the "Chinometers" in our scooters today.
