I don't notice any difference going 35-40 MPH with my 10" rims, you might check to see if something is out of balance on the wheels or if something is LOOSE or worn like a wheel bearing, axle nut or something. Could be that one bolt and nut that holds the handlebars on to the steering column has come loose- see if that's god and tight with no play between the front wheel and the handlebars when you hold one steady and try moving the other. Could be a loose or worn stearing column bearing too

Does anyone else's breaks squeal. I adjusted my rears pretty tight so I don't need much pressure in the back but I hear the rears making some noise, they have done it before when I put pressure on them but now it seems more prevelant. I have 800km on them and wondering what the distance should be that I replace, the front are disc and they seem have a lot of life left on them. I know breaks tend to make noise if they are cheapo and I'm assuming these are as well.

My rears squeak as well 350km. I'm probably gonna order a few sets of brakes as we got 4 atm50s in the family.

Drum brakes squeal more often than not. You *could* remove the rear tire and clean the drum with solvent and sand the pads with 200 grit sandpaper. You could also spray anti-squeal junk behind the pads. They tend to squeal more in the cold. When they warm up the squealing goes away.

A lot of the atm50s were secret 63s. The batch of orange ones I got however are not.

I just bought one of these 2 days ago to replace my finally dead scooter. Bought it brand new just out of the crate, dove it all the way home 51 miles and got it up to 47mph gps verified. Maybe a secret 63 again? lol
I already ordered a BBK, cdi, coil and new carb and 6.5gr rollers. Lets see what it does after that lol

I want to know what jet sizes your ATM50's have. I finally got the tamper-proof screws out of the carb and the imprint on the main jet is extremely faint. I *think* it is a 78. Also, the pilot idle jet is stamped H30. I'm guessing that means it is a 30, but most of the websites I visit say that 35 is stock for a 50cc.
One more thing; I'm 95% sure that the stock CDI on the ATM50's is governed, can anyone confirm this?

I had trouble with poor idle and with bogging down 0-1/4 throttle when it was below 70 degrees. I put in a #40 idle and the bogging issue went away, but now it doesn't idle well, so I'm going to put in a 35. I had put a #80 main in (up from 78)

Haven't had my carb out yet to check the jets. How did you go about getting the tamper proof screws out?

Haven't had my carb out yet to check the jets. How did you go about getting the tamper proof screws out? The easiest way, by replacing the carb with a brand new one from mainlyscooters for $40 was how I did it. Others try to carefully drill them out and use ezy-outs or similar broken screw extractors, but unless you have those you have to buy them, and if you aren't real careful it's real easy to do some damage and then yer screwed till you get a replacement in the mail. I did drill them out of the original carb after I got the new carb to check what jets it had, but one of the holes drilled off center despite doing this on a drill press and marking a center, and that made it much harder to get that screw out as the ezy-out couldnt get a good grab and I needed to drill deeper, but since it was off-center I couldnt drill much deeper without damaging the carb body. Those screws are very small and the bit to drill has to be very small as well, and small bits tends to flex or bend and wander as this did. The 2 phillips on the top were in so tight I had to drill those out as well.

You will need to up jet the carb with a 80 BBK as to what size jet I am unsure. Others should have some more input.

I took mine out today as I needed to run to the store, and I just ran it out a few miles before, it's much smoother all along the throttle range now. I added a little seafoam to the gas yesterday as well. It was running real well on the flat going 35 so I opened it a bit more briefly and it hit about 48 mph and I believe it had a little more beyond left yet. The speedometer is almost dead-on at 30 mph, so I assume when it read 48 it was at least 45.

Yeah, one of our rental scooters cracked a piston last year because of it. I didn't change the carb like I should have and just left the stocker in there. On the hottest day of the year up here it blew and left a couple stranded.

My right brake lever ball tip broke last week and I ordered a replacement, and while it looked the same and all, it wound up not quit fitting, the hole was right but the little extended area that hits the brake light switch is too close to the hole in comparison to the original, it's about 1/4" off. I went to to the TaoTaoUSA web site but it's of no help. Of course you google TaoTao 50 brake lever or parts and practically EVERY scooter parts web site comes up in the search now, but then when you look for that part it's either listed as "generic 49 cc scooter" or "fits most" Looks like a bunch of them are keyword spamming Google to come up in the search results no matter what you order, even if they don't carry the part or brand at all. Looks like this but the projecting arm on the very left on my original is further to the left and this lever doesn't work; Anyone a genuine TaoTao parts dealer, or are these original parts just not available? I guess worst comes to worst I can grind the end a bit rounded and spot some black paint over it, only the ball itself broke off when the wind blew the scooter over when it was parked, so it's still functional, but I don't want to order 3 or 4 more wrong ones to finally get one that actually FITS right!

Hi, I'm looking seriously at getting a Tao Tao for my son for a little basic transportation to a summer job while he saves up for a car for the winter, and I don't mind at all that he might learn to do a little wrenchin' along the way, but from all the forums and reviews I've been reading I'm starting to wonder if ANYONE has ever had one of these without having major problems with it. I know that I'm probably reading mostly the bad cases since very few people bother to post threads proclaiming the endless joy they've found with their flawlessly reliable machines, but does anyone have any thoughts about the odds I'd end up embarrassed to have given my son a(nother) gift that turns out to be a worthless piece of junk? I know the obvious answer is buy a $4000 Honda or a Vespa, but my pockets just ain't that deep. I'm at a stretch just coming up with the Tao Tao kind of cash, (and if I had that kind of money I'd just buy the car). Can anyone give some thoughts to those of us thinking about buying?

Well, I ordered a new Tao Tao ATM50-A1. When it gets here I want to do everything right, but livin' here in the sticks means parts have to be ordered ahead of time as they might well not be available locally. Would anyone be so kind as to tell me what kind of spark plug is stock on these scooters so I can have a quality replacement here? Also, what other parts might I want to have ordered, I.e. air filter, oil filter, anything that should be replaced on arrival? Are the stock batteries OK, or should I look into replacing it?
