Actually where I live is not so bad, Bob. But, Atlanta is a big city now. It's got over half a million people in it at night and 5 million people in it during the day.
Truthfully I don't think anyone would steal parts off my porch. I keep a lot of plants and outdoor decor out there that no one touches.
But, people get their working scooters stolen around here...most likely when they don't lock the forks and throw a rope around the back tire. And there are a LOT of scooters around her....it's like China in my neighborhood (or how I imagine Chine would be with a million scooter buzzing around).

My family came to Georgia, St. Mary's, in 1795. By about 1840 they were in Atlanta. Still have a few cousins there. It is way too big for me, I stay down here in the swamp. I can walk out the back door and it is 3/4 mile to the next road, more really, you have to detour around the gators! ;D All the men in the family were overseas in WW2, the house on Winona Drive was where all the women and kids spent the war years. I had aunts and cousins all over the place. My granma ran a tight ship, still got the little vase she kept switches in. My mom is an Ohio girl, they taught her how to talk right in Atlanta! ;D

I hear ya. I grew up in a little Louisiana town outside of New Orleans right on the Mississippi. I claim NOLA as my hometown because people have heard of it and because that's where my family settled after coming over from Italia. But I grew up in the swamps.
However, I have found that at heart I am a pure city girl. I like the hustle and bustle and all the people. I like standing on my elevated front porch and seeing the city skyline with it's high rises that glitter, especially at night. I like stepping off my yard and walking up the street to a pub or to get groceries and if I go the other way down the street I'm at the park. I like that my dayjob is only 3 miles from my house and that the elementary school is a half mile on the way.
I do like the country, though. I have a friend who has a farm in Winder (towards Athens if you don't remember). She has a log cabin and a lake. Sometimes I go out there and spend the weekend. We sit out on her porch at night and listen to the ruralness. It's more than crickets and birds. Heck, you can hear the crickets and birds in my neighborhood in the city. But you hear bullfrogs out there. And the water buffalo...and the sheep. And the circada. and a whole lot of other critters.
Anyway, now look at this forum...the last several posts have been nothing but chat. Tonight I will be getting that belt cover off! I will! I'll take a pic and post it....

*SIGH*
I have the right tools now.
Only it looks like it's about to pour cats and dogs.
If this ends up being one of those days where it feels all wet and story outside yet it does NOT rain I am going to be ticked!
....to spare everyone who is still listening I will get back when I have an actual picture to post...that's of my scoot...

Yeah, Little 5 is a nice place to live near. Lots of interesting people walking around. I live less than a mile away from The Vortex (the bike bar and grille with the skull face entrance www.thevortexbarandgrill.com/TheVortex/index.htm ). It's fun riding my scooter there on Bike Night.... OK, I FINALLY had the trifecta...tools, camera, weather. I got the belt cover off with no resistance whatsoever using a good ratchet set. Here are the pics (might be repetitive...but trying to get the best shot):

Did everyone forget about me or lose interest? It rained cats and dogs yesterday but today it's supposed to hold off until dark so when I get home I am going to go out and see if I can follow the kick back to the tranny. I should note that I can grab the big wheel that's connected to the back tire (I don't know the technical name for it) and turn the back wheel with it. This might be completely normal and tell you nothing. I'll let you know...

The rear unit is the clutch. Can you turn the front assembly? It is attached to the engine crankshaft.

No, I can't. I should have mentioned that. It wouldn't turn, not with a good grip on it and a decent tug with my bare hand.

Nothing obvious there Jen, time to take off the starter and see if that's it.

Is there anything with not being able to turn the front assembly?
After I take the starter off, what do I do?

Post by Aaron on Jul 26, 2007 15:35:38 GMT -5
Jen the front assembly is bolted directly to the crankshaft.. the heart of the engine. We already know the engine won't turn. Once you take the starter off see if the engine will turn by grabbing the front assembly and turning it. If so the starter drive gear was locked on to the flywheel and preventing it from turning and you need a new starter. If it still doesn't turn something else is wrong...

OK, gotcha and thanks for the explanation. I'll take the starter off, if I can, this afternoon and then come back and let you know what happened. Want me to take any pictures?
Anything to look for with the starter that I can see? Like would I be able to see that the starter drive gear is locked on the flywheel or will that be hidden or encased?

Jen I don't think you can see if the starter is engaged until you remove it. Be warned.. as I said earlier I have never removed a starter from a GY6 engine so I don't know any tips or tricks.. I'm just relaying general theory as to what may be wrong.

I'm thinking that if it is the starter there would be enough free play to let the crank turn a little bit, back and forth.

The starter is completely out gear and all and the engine still is stuck? Or the starter won't come out?

Sorry, I haven't taken the starter out. I thought by
that you meant with the starter still on.
My bad! I've got about an hour and a bit before I will be able to try to take the starter out. Still at work...

OK Jen! I hope it's just the starter. After that I'm out of ideas and Swamp or someone will have to do the suggesting...

I'm starting to get worried. The confusing thing is that the scooter was running OK until shut off.

I sure hope that's it because I wouldn't have a clue....though I've learned a lot through this.
OK, I'll post back here this evening.

I'm trying to visualize a way the kick starter could jam if someone messed with it while the scooter was parked. In this picture gear 2 is slightly behind gear 1, not in contact. When the starter is used, gear 2 moves out, and engages gear 1. Can you see behind the variator if gear 2 is engaged with gear 1?

OK, I just went out and looked at the kick arrangement and I can just see behind the variator. Gear 2 is not engaged to gear1. I can manipulate the kick so that it turns gears 3 and 4, with gear 2 moving up. But once gear 2 hits gear 1 it stops cold.
I'm going to try to take the starter off now, while I have light.

OK, so I don't know what I am doing with the starter....I looked at that picture posted earlier and I am not sure of the size of the starter. Is it the brass colored cylinder with the two bolts/screws that touched with my screwdriver early on in this adventure? I thought that thing was just the relay?
Where is the starter typically located? And how does removing it potentially free things up?
Can either of you walk me through what it is exactly I need to be removing? Is it one little part or a connection of wires and stuff?

Looks like this on top of engine in front of rear wheel..two bolts holding it in... and the wires. Like I said though I've never removed one! Aaron

OK, thanks, I'll go take a look. A lot of parts have rubber covers on them so I might have to pry around. In the meantime I am going to post a pic of things I am curious about. See below:

The thing going to the fuel pump is the fuel filter. Can't tell from the picture on the other but if it's white fluffy powder like stuff it's aluminum corrosion.. no big deal.

OK, I found the starter. I can see and get to it from where the kick gears are. However, the Mad Scientist took his tiny ratchet set back to his Secret Lab so I have to wait until tomorrow. I am losing light anyway. The MS said he'd bring his set home but I am buying my own over the weekend. That's two good weather days I couldn't work on this because I didn't have the tools.
OK, after Saturday I am going to be out of town for a whole week for work. I'm going to be in DC. The MS and my kid are coming along as a last minute vacation since my company pays for the hotel room. That's just unnecessary FYI, there. However, it means you won't hear from me for a week after my last post on Saturday. But I am still not giving up on this.....so I will be back!

OK, thanks, good to know. Yes, it's a white fluffy stuff. I didn't know aluminum corroded....
OK, I give y'all the night off. Be back tomorrow evening with an update if I can get the starter off.
Thank you SO much for the help.
