Follow The Journey at www.4321fun.com/msj/index.phpWelcome To The Adventure. [/size] My name is Jason (Everyone calls me Jay) I am a 33 year old photographer (in actuality I was raised up as a DJ in broadcast radio and fell into the IT world later in the game) but now I primarily take photos of beautiful women. It’s a tough occupation but someone has to do it right? I came into the scooter world only in March of this year and fell in love with my first scoot, also called "Scoot". While I loved her, she had been ridden hard by her previous owner and I eventually knew if I was going to stay in the scoot game I would need a new companion. Don't get me wrong, I logged lots of great miles with Scoot and even learned how operate on a small engine without many difficulties. Yes Scoot taught me a lot, but one thing she always showed me is that a reliable scoot takes time, effort, and most of all PARTS. Sometimes lots of them. Some of you may already know about the bet that took place between me and a dear friend over this summer. Since you can read about the details HERE I won’t go into it on this page. The site will be updated while I continue to progress to leave the state of Maine and head south for the winter... on a scoot no less. The trip will be comprised of over 2,100 miles and 8 days of traveling. Special thanks go out to Dean from ScootDawg who helped with the planning. If you're interested in being a haven (a place me and scoot can count on for help should the need arise) you can click HERE. Before doing so make sure to check the trip maps to make sure you are within 25-50 miles EAST-WEST of my route at anytime. Good rule of thumb is if you don't see your town in the maps on my route you're probably too far away. We live in a world filled and surrounded by social bookmarks and networking, my adventure site was designed no different. You can like us on facebook, tweet to us on twitter, and even see the fuel consumption on fuelly. The technologies used to build the website are vast. There is the open source CMS platform known as joomla, its php and mysql backend. That’s just the start. For mobile administration I will be using jooid for android, I have the ability to upload blogs, videos, and photos to a picasa gallery all from my phone. I hope to update this site at least at the end of every day of riding (of course that's in a perfect world) you can also follow along with me in REALTIME as scoot moves across the east coast by clicking HERE. There is not much more to say as the trip is being prepared. I thank those who stop by and hope you will vote in the polls, check out the blogs and photos as well as video, and feel free to just hang around, its sure to be an interesting adventure. One last thing before I go, a lot of people in the two forums I will be forever indebted to for the knowledge they provided, which are Scootdawg and 49ccScoot, have asked me to post updates to my trip as i progress. Unfortunately, I cannot promise this, as it most likely will not happen. The reason the site was built was to provide a central access to all trip information, and i am already going to be chock full of stuff to do to keep you all updated. Oh i almost forgot dont forget to sign my guestbook so i know people like this site, please keep your comments appropriate, they will go live once you submit them, but i will check them from time to time. Post to the guestbook here! www.4321fun.com/msj/index.php?option=com_easybookreloaded&controller=entry&task=add&Itemid=197Now if you'll excuse me I must go and pack..... See you in the Keys! What displacement is this scooter you will be on, 150cc I think I read? I just looked at the day 1 map and I don't think I95 is going to be a good choice, you just can't keep up with traffic... If this bike is any less than 250cc you need to use mapquest and select "Avoid Highways."
Assuming you take Route 1 as an alternate, get on the bypass in Kittery, it'll shave off some time (especially since the Rt 1 memorial bridge is closed).

Jay , wish you the best for your journey Although I think the trip is definately doable ,I gotta agree with D-cat . Highways are gonna be your enemy . First off most of the highway you have the speed limit is 65 which with a 150cc probably cant do and if you can you don't leave that little bit extra needed for avoidence in some riding situations. And second and I think even more important is the strain on the engine riding scoot flat out for long periods. Personally if I was doing it I would have tried to find a route with the majority of it being in the 45-50 mph range. It would probably add a couple days to the journey but would raise the success rate two fold. That being said I won't know for sure until that week but in all probability i will be a "haven" for ya for a good part of the jersey shore. It's a couple hours away and if you get to Atlantic City I'll meet ya there and dinners on me ;D good luck

Hi Jay, wish I had gotten to you sooner, about your route on a 150cc. Some of the guys on scootdawg were right about staying off interstates. Not Safe ! Dangerous ! I'm planning a fall Oct/Nov, 50cc with mods (47cc) to 50+mph. My safer all hwy route south thru NJ rt 1-9 into De to 869 to 301 to Port Royal,Va to 17 south coastal rt, all the way into FL, then US1or A1A scenic routes all the way to FL Keys. It's longer but a lot safer on a scoot. --savy If you need further info for your return trip: PM me savy09 on Scootdawg or savytel@verizon.net

I wish your maps would load for me, still unable. I have hi speed internet access, maybe I am missing or need to download some driver or plug-in? All I get is a circular "loading" icon, even after 20 minutes of waiting. I tried the PDF file and don't get a map either.
Anyway I think you are taking the Cape May - Lewes Ferry (From NJ to DE) and if so you will be in my area. If driving down Route 1 in Delaware from Lewes you will hit many beach towns (Rehoboth, Dewey Beach, Bethany Beach, Fenwick Island (where I live)) and then into MD is Ocean City MD. Not sure when you are to arrive in this area but if need anything reach out.
Good luck!

I wouldn't mind being a safe haven he'll be passing right by me on his trip day 4 or 5 I think. I'm in Norfolk VA on the way to Virginia Beach which is where Jay looks to be heading eventually. I tried to fill out the form but it's not there on the site.

I am a "Safe Haven" once he gets into Delaware from the Cape May-Lewes Ferry. I can cover him all the way from Lewes to the MD/VA line area. Looking at his route I see he plans to go inland when he gets to Delaware instead of hugging the Delaware coast and beach towns along Route 1. His trip will be much more scenic and pleasureable if he were to stay on Route 1 along the coast hitting the beach towns along the way. He can dogleg right back to 113 via Route 50 once he drives through and leaves Ocean City MD. It's just a better trip in terms of traffic and scenery.......... might be quicker too not to mention I live along the beach in this area if he needed a place to crash stay.
Anyway if anyone is able to reach him please pass this info along. Glad to see he has gone for it and wish him luck during his travels.

Yeah if anyone can get in touch with him or he can log on here or something, I can provide a couch to crash on in Norfolk. I'm RIGHT off I-64 not even a full mile I don't think. Might even be able to give some ideas where to take some pics (wouldn't mind having some advice on taking my own pics since I finally got a DSLR now).

Did Jay lose his phone in Lewes or is he having scooter issues?
I am not certain if he planned to ride down Route 1 today or Route 113............ or if he needed a place to stay tonight. I tracked his progress through out the day to see which route he was going to take through Delaware. I noticed he got off the Ferry around ~4:00PM or so. It appears as if he has been at the same gas station/auto store for the past couple hours now in Lewes, just down the road from the ferry terminal.
Hope all is ok.
Edit: Nevermind I see he is on the move now................. or maybe not. Stationary now just down from where he was for a while. Hopehe is not having scooter issues.

Poor guy, I see he took every unlit back road through farm fields and isolation in the county. Not sure why, maybe intentional but it wouldn't be my choice at night especially with all the deer this time time of year. Kinda surprised he didn't take Route 1 along the Delaware beach towns and into Ocean City MD, much easier ride, quicker and scenic............ not to mention if he had broken down he wouldn't have been in the middle of no where.
I was hoping he would have gone south along the coast line and beach area, I would have ridden with him some. Glad to see he is on the move.

wow bro... i was just checking to see when you start your trip and you have way through it.. and i notice you have an oil leak and have to manufacture you own parts to get rolling again.. only bad thing about these chinese scoots , you can't go to the local parts house and get what you need.. i am sure the repairs you did will be great and you'll be rolliing again tomorrow.. take this time to rest and gear up for the rest of your journey.

Hi Jay, I want to know where the negative idiots are posting so that I can leave some remarks of my own for them. I know you will make it to the Keys and I am following you all the way. Barb & Rachael say "Hello" and that they miss you. That probably gives up the guess. Take Care. Dave of De Leon

I have been providing phone support for Jason during this trip. Here is the latest..
From looking at the photos Jason sent both the piston skirt and and the lower portion of the cylinder that goes into the case had completely failed and broken up. I was quite surprised to see that the lower portion of the cylinder was 1MM or less. So it looks to me that it wouldn't take all that much rattling of the piston to break this portion. The rings and wrist pin circlips were all in place and in one piece and not a lot of scuffing was evident on the piston. There was evidence the piston was rocking in the cylinder with some wear on the edge of the piston crown above the ring lands. I would expect to see this with either a broken skirt or incorrect piston to bore tolerance. With destroyed parts it is kind of hard to tell which occured first but either the piston skirt or the cylinder created the terminal failure. I do believe the engine was assembled correctly. It probably has about 500 miles on this new replacement cylinder. With this type of failure the shrapnel in the lower end makes the repair of this engine really not feasable. With a new engine, carb and a few larger jets Jason could be well on his way to continue and finish this somewhat arduous journey.
On the carb. Jason's original carb has an idle mixture circuit that does not work. I myself had that carb apart three times and blew everything out well with out being able to pinpoint the issue. With the relatively low cost of replacement I suggested he simply replace the carb. He started the trip the next day. He did replace the carb at one of his stops however that carb ran extremely rich fouling the spark plug black and causing a misfire. I am not sure if this was the incorrect carb or it was defective. There are really only a few thing that can make a simple engine like this rich. We checked those things and decided that the problem was this new carb. Putting his old carb back on was an immediate improvement and the plug cleaned itself after just a few miles of driving as I would expect.
I am recomending he also upsize the jets a bit. At one of his stops he sent me some photos of the air box. When this plastic airbox was molded there were 36 rectangular slots at the bottom that would form a sort of course screen for the intake to this airbox. 24 of them were not puched through during the molding process. He has opened these up but my guess is the airbox is now less restricted so the jets should be upsized a bit.
Jason at this point is just trying to explore his options and my recomendation is to upjet a replacment carb and get a new engine then continue the trip.

also you will be happy to know that unlike the first part of the trip i will be taking a more "humble" approach towards this forum and its comments, especially when they pertain to the well being and life of the scooter, my mechanic (noah) mentioned the other day that (while not all) ALOT of the things that were predicted to go worng on this forum did in fact happen, im notblind to that at all lets work together in the new year for me to finish this journey, and somehow even though we ALL KNOW these things are not durable, reliable, nor trustworthy, lets try to show the world that all the scooters can succeed in their endeavors with or without the help i will make it, but i would feel better if it was with, the knowledge of this forum could have been very valuable had i chosen to heed it, as i am now Have a merry xmas everyone! we ALL KNOW these things are not durable, reliable, nor trustworthy, That's not true- They can be all of those things...they just weren't designed/intended for sustained high-speed use- just like a Geo isn't designed to tow a 20,000 lb. trailer. Push anything mechanical consistently beyond it's limits, and their durability and reliability goes out the window.

Mine is durable, reliable and trustworthy. I would be willing to go from Phoenix to Miami on it...at 40-45 mph on side roads not interstate!
Small scoots are not designed to rip down the interstate! Chinese scoots are designed for people with some mechanical aptitude.
Why not accept responsibility for your own actions? Do you honestly think the outcome would have been any different had you tried this on a 110-150 cc kymco, Honda or whatever? Maybe you would have had a warranty and dealer support, but my local Honda dealer would have kept your bike for two weeks to get it fixed. Think you should buy a Honda for the return trip and treat it the exact same way and find out if the results are really any different.
