It really depends on what your goals are to as what scooter is best.
I have a whole collection of scooters. A result of different goals at different times. I don't regret any of them. Went from having a cheap 50cc to cruise around the neighborhood on to having a top end machine to take off on a 1,000 mile trip with the Mrs's on back.
If I had started out with the S'wing then I would have ended up paying for oil changes at the dealership, as I would have been too unfamiliar with how scooters to work to have confidence maintaining one and an $8,000 bike is too much money for me to lose if I 'do something wrong'.
I still use my 150cc Chinese scooter for around town. It's way lighter then the S'wing and since I don't care about it I can leave it parked out front and just hop on to go to the corner store.

I don't have enough money yet, being an unemployed teenager, but I found what I think is a really good deal, it's on craigslist its a black MC54 250 with small scratches and about 6k miles, the guy says that it looks good and runs good and hes selling it for 750, a great price compared to the retail 1800, what do you guys think? I don't know if my mom would give me a loan, but do you think it's a good deal? When do these scooters just give up on life? Like, how long do you think I would have it working if it's got 6k miles?

If you can get the money, buy it. By now it's been de-bugged and had all the things done that you would have had to learn the hard way. It will be much easier this way.

yeah it seems like a really good deal, I sent him an email, hopefully he'll send back.
UPDATE: My mom says she isnt giving me a loan and that she thinks many other chances will come up but I doubt that another one so good as this one will. I mean the guy is close to us, has the scooter I want, in good shape and working, and at such a low price, I dont think it'l come up again, so this kinda sucks.
