Hi Everyone, As the forum gets more and more users, a lot of people here are starting to post pictures and having fun with their tag lines and signatures. This is great, but I wanted to share with you some of the problems not doing it correctly creates for other non-Windows users. When you post pictures here, please remember that not all people like to use the image resize feature in our browsers, and some of us don't even have it on our portable devices, so I thought I would share what happens to our views of the forum when pictures are posted improperly. Here is a shot of my Linux machine's browser (Firefox) this morning after someone posted a picture that was straight off their camera at 1024 x 768 pixels: Notice where the scroll bar is on the bottom? So in order for me to read the text, I have to scroll back and forth with each line because the photo is so wide. Also notice the user information area, and how wide it is? Someone's tag line says: Here is L.A. Loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooove my scooter!I PMed the user so as not to embarrass them... but the long word love without any spaces causes the user area to get very wide. For those of you who are unfamiliar with posting pictures, I have a tutorial at this link that shows a one-click resize and how to use PhotoBucket. I have seen photos on here as large as 1600 x 1200 pixels and in this size, this entire posts text would be on about 7 lines for me! I would have to scroll forever to the right... Please be kind and resize your photos! There are a lot of people here who don't use the image resizing feature in our browsers. -Rich

This needs a sticky, or should go in the 'new to..." section.
Great info once again Rich.
Hope to see the new shop Labor Day Weekend.

i always resize my photos to 640X480 and then just post a thumbnail of that image. if you want the big one just click the thumbnail. i use XS.TO as my host.

Another reason to keep the size down is for folks like Aerostudent who are on dial-up connections. Even though a 1280x1024 profile pic may be downsized automatically, the full sized picture has to be downloaded... as much as a megabyte for a "tiny" picture.

Whew, you had me worried there for a second, rattlemeter. I though you were going to say keep the size down because most of us Scootdawgs can't comprehend many words that have more than one syllable!!! (Notice I said US instead of YOU)

Just to help clarify, I believe you had said in the past 640x480 should be about as large as we go for posting images to help avoid this problem. Please correct me if I'm wrong. EDIT : I see that is stated in your tutorial. Oops. Yes, I should have posted it here as well, thanks for the add... Also, another common mistake people make is they want everyone to see the part in question, so they post a large photo. Alternatively, one can click on EDIT while in PhotoBucket and crop the area they want people to see. This will actually be better for the viewer, while keeping the part large and the image small. Click on edit: Click on crop: Click and drag your mouse over the area you want to keep: -Rich

Great info Rich, I just hate it when you have to scroll back and forth to read the text. And Aero is still on dial-up? I thought I was the last one to get broadband.

Still on dial-up. I'm the last number on our phone line to boot, so it is even slower than your average dial-up connection (I'm at 28800 bps right now, and that is as fast as it gets). We're looking at like 10 more years before we can actually get cable, but ironically the local Walmart is about 3 miles down the road, and a luxury housing track that has high speed net is only a stones throw away, but we don't matter, we are in a boon-docks. We even have a neighbor, less than 500ft away that has a cable box in front of his yard, but they can't run it to our place because we're not in their service area. The only place that will service us is like 3 miles away and they wanted something like $700 a foot to run it to our place. Yeah, dial-up sucks... Aero

Say Aero, can't you get it through your cable (I've got Comcast) or phone (Windstream keeps dogging me to switch)?

...and they wanted something like $700 a foot to run it to our place... Wow! That's unreal! We just had power run to our vacation property in MS from the main highway and they only charged $40 a foot, including telephone poles and all... plus they had to clear the route with a bulldozer. -Rich

Yeah, unreal. I'm not sure of the exact numbers, but it was extremely expensive. We can't get cable either (oh no!!! How will I ever live without 800+ channels... : I was thinking about getting a wireless card for my laptop, but it hasn't gone much farther than that. Aero *We have "The Network" (verizon) and our house is a ' dead zone'

I hate to ask this, but is there a ban on video avitars? I can't remember if that's here or somewhere else that I go. I can tell you that moving avitars REALLY slow down my page loading speed and makes it take fffooooorrrreeeeevvvveeeerrrrrr to load anything.

Aerostudent we use an aircard in our home PC since we do not have cable or DSL yet. We are in a new area and no one knows when we will get either. I could go to satellite, but then would have to have 2 dishes on the house and that I just don't want... plus during T-storms, it is not reliable. The aircard is an improvement over dial up, but it is still a waiting game. And it isn't cheap... As soon as we either get cable or DSL we are changing.

So who exactly uses Winblow$ anymore? Photobucket has all the tools you need there. Just choose the resize as per my tutorial and you'll be just fine. No extra software or steps needed... one extra click. Oh, and they have software on the site for all kinds of re-sampling of the pics if you want, just click on Edit. -Rich

How about organizing this forum a little more meaning, Put your most recent post at the top of each thread Starting most recent and going down to the oldest. This way hot topics are near the top and outdated ones are near the end pages back

So who exactly uses Winblow$ anymore? About 90% of the world. I know, its a shame, and being a linux guy myslef, it felt dirty to get a degree using M$ products, but hey, since they make such a crappy product (server 03 and 08) it keeps me in business

Thank you. I am not quite the internet junkie most people are, so I will have to read all this again and again. Another suggestion: If we are going to go to the trouble to enter a message here, why not capitalize the first word of each sentence, and use proper punctuation? I see more and more people doing other wise, and it just bothers me to no end, it looks like the writer is partially illiterate, or just plain lazy...

Click on Profile --> Modify Profile and scroll down to where it says Avatar. In the address of the avatar you have to provide a direct link to the picture you want to use. Assuming you're using PhotoBucket: Paste this address in the avatar address box. -Rich

Sure, go to Photobucket and find the picture and then click edit. Resize it to 100 pixels in either direction and it'll clear up. Right now you have it in 640x480, so it's being truncated. Or, you can use this one if you prefer: Here is the address to copy and paste if you want to use it: http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee19/powerscooters/html%20stuff/telafunkinu47.jpg -Rich
