I have a 2008 Fly Scooter Cadenza whose speedometer stopped working this morning.
Is this something that is easily fixed or something that would require extensive mechanic work?

There are three possible problems, 1. Speedometer cable is broken. 2. Speedometer is defective, or 3. Gear at front wheel that turns speedometer cable is bad. My first guess would be a bad speedometer cable, it's probably broken, a fairly easy thing to fix. If your Fly Scooter is a 2008, isn't it still under warranty?

you would think so, but our autorized dealer here in Austin TX. SUCKS!!! I have found a decent scooter repair place that I can take it to have them look at it but I wondered if it was something that I could inspect myself.

You can unscrew the end of the speedometer cable at the wheel and see if it's broken. Just try pulling it out, it should have a square end at the speedometer head that fits into a square slot that drives the speedometer. If it looks frayed or broken you've found the problem. If it is broken you'll only get part of it out more than likely. In that case you'll have to pull out the broken parts at both ends and replace it.
I should probably also say that inside the cable is a round drive cable, it looks like a wire wound piece of cable, they often break if there's a kink in the cable or it rubs the inside of the cable in a tight bend.

It could also be the tabs inside the wheel are bent. You will need to pull the front wheel off to straighten them out.

We have had a few of the Cadenzas with this problem - every one was the speedo gear driver attached to the front wheel. These bikes were indicating pretty optimistic speeds until the gear went (not properly lubed - or grease escaped through the seal). My customers were disapointed to get back their bikes that now only go 60 instead of 70 mph! We replaced all these gear drivers under warranty.

you would think so, but our autorized dealer here in Austin TX. SUCKS!!! Who is that? High Definition Powersports on Ben White Boulevard? I'm pretty sure they've gone out of business. With the scooter on the center stand, you'll see the speedo cable going to the wheel. Take off the cover at the wheel and spin it. See if the little tab inside the gear box turns. We have only had one Cadenza with a failed odometer and it turned out to be the cable itself. Either way, PM me on what you find, your name, VIN number and date of purchase and I'll work with Flyscooters to get you the parts. -Rich
