Can anybody recommend a high quality relatively inexpensive 2 stroke oil that would be well suited for a 50cc scooter? Preferably something that every auto parts store carries. Also, what's the correct mix ratio? Thanks

I'm no expert but I'm first.
From what I understand the best oil, theoretically, for a two-stroke is Synthetic ester based oils. The best smelling is castor bean oil.
I use motul synthetic. It smells real bad, it was expensive, but not the most expensive. I choose it because it seemed middle of the road synthetic.

ive checked every auto parts store in my area (and believe me, theres about 10 of them) and none of them carry full-synthetic 2 stroke oil. The only place I could find it was at a motorsports dealer, and they wanted like $15 for half a quart. I settled for synthetic-blend valvoline 2stroke outboard oil from Advance Auto Parts for exactly $5 a quart (after tax)

I use Lucas semi-synthetic racing oil. I've been using it for years...it's cheap, available at my local O'Reilly's Auto and I've not had a problem with my 2t scooters yet.
I also can't find fully synthetic 2t oil anywhere near me, but I'm not sure it's really needed on a 2t...after all, you're burning the oil. I can see more need in a 4t for synthetic.

Is it ok to mix up a large batch(5 gallons or so) and let it set and just fill up as needed?

Maxima Racing Oil I've been using Maxima Racing Oil, both the Scooter 2T and also the Scooter Pro 2T. Actually I'm going run out the Scooter 2T before I start using my Scooter Pro 2T, which judging from how many tanks it takes to go through one tank of 2T oil, it might be a while. The Scooter 2T is dino, the Scooter Pro is synthetic blend. It's not the nicest smelling stuff but it seems to work pretty well. I may try the Klotz or Ipone out of curiosity, but the Maxima works well. BTW, if anyone also has a 4-stroke scoot, Maxima also makes Scooter 4T dino, Syn Blend4, and Ultra4 Synthetic. It's not cheap but's it's not expensive, I would classify it as middle priced, $6.95/liter for the dino, $8.95/liter for the synthetic blend available at my favorite scooter shop. My scooter is oil injection so I can't tell you how much to add per gallon or whatever. All I know is that it lasts a long time. FYI: 1 liter = 1.05 quart

Make sure you choose the proper oil for premix. Some oils are specified for premix and some for injection, others are safe either way. I use AMSOil Sabre Professional 100:1 Premix (full synthetic) and mix it at 50:1... but it's not really cheap ($10/qt). With most synthetics/blends I'd run around 40:1. With a standard cheaper oil I'd prob stick to 32:1 or so.
It is OK to mix up 5 gallons at a time and fill up as needed, that's what I do as well as filling up at pumps. I would suggest only premixing enough for a couple of weeks though unless you'll be adding a fuel stabilizer.
Oh, Bel Ray Si7 is another 2T oil that hasn't been mentioned but gets good reviews and is usually available at motorcycle shops.

I have been looking for Amsoil around here and havent had any luck. Bel Ray is good. Klotz mixed with race gas has been known to make me a bit crazy when i smell it... Its like being at a race track lol, smells sweet almost like cotton candy. I have people asking if im running, or they just flat out tell me im running race fuel and its just Klotz with pump gas. Just pay attention to the kind you get, they have allot of different 2cycle blends. EDIT: This is the stuff the tech guy at Klotz told me to run. Good stuff! www.klotzlube.com/proddetail.asp?prod=KL-302_Quart&cat=4

I order AMSOil by the case from their website. some of us don't have that kind of cash to buy a year supply of oil though I looked into amsoil when I first got my scoot, and found it to be about $8 to $9 a quart. That isn't too terrible, but the shipping was insane!

That isn't too terrible, but the shipping was insane! I'm gonna use it at some point, might as well get it in bulk and pay shipping once. With the amount of fuel that I burn in good weather, I would spend a real fortune on shipping if I didn't order by the case. It's $135.28 shipped for 12 qts ($11.27/qt shipped). If you order a qt at a time it's $17.55/qt shipped.

heh... yeah, the AMSoil is steep if you order it 1 quart at a time... I have beed a Ford tech at the local dealership for about 8 years now...I did a sidejob for some extra cash and just ordered the case off the site for 135 bucks. So a little labor on my part payed for alot of oil =)

Can't find it around here and ordering one liter has a bit insane ship cost, but I ordered two liters recently and I'm set for a good chunk of time.

top three best would have to be castorol 2 stroke oil, ams race oil. or maxima racing 2 stroke scooter oil. you cant go wrong with any of them. when i raced dirtbikes those are some of the bets i found.

Ok 2 things about premixing. First off the general properties of liquids. Think back to your high school science class days. Or take a look at anything you've mixed and let sit. Substances with different molecular weights will tend to eventually separate. A fairly easy to describe situation is grease. Leave a container of grease to sit for a while and the liquid will separate from the solid and rest on top. I would assume the oil and gas would do the same (I have not tried it myself).
Second is the gas itself. Unless you're in a pure dino area where you can get the stuff without the vegetarian additive, you're looking at MAJOR issues with letting that gas sit. First off gas loses potency after a few months. This makes the fuel weaker and possibly unusable without an additive or cutting it with new fuel. The second issue with the fuel is that the ethanol seems to have water issues after sitting for long periods. I've heard people having water in the tank which I'm assuming is from condensation after leaving their boat sit for a while. Of course the seals are a bigger issue with the ethanol in boat motors it would seem.
