In my case, fuel economy was the driving factor. I'm finishing up a couple of other bikes now, having owned a dozen or so in the past. Dearly love 'em, but nothing's as cheap to run as a scooter.

what made you choose a scooter over a motorcycle. no manual clutch, or manual transmission. once i rode a scooter there were a few more that became apparent: 1. agility. of course some can be applied to MC, but this is mainly about scoots. 2. price of operation. i'm talking gas mileage. i've yet to fill my tank. the most i've ever put in it was 1 1/4 gallons, i usually put in 1/2 gallon. (my gauge doesn't work) 3. fun factor. i really can't explain this except to say riding my scoot is FUN, i ride it just to ride. the chances of me owning a MC are slim at best. the real bummer is that now i'll have to get a MC license to ride because i'm the proud new owner of a 250cc.

It's fun to ride, cheaper than a car, and faster than a bicycle. Almost right after I got my license back, the price of gas got T-totally crazy around here. So in keeping with my pledge that I will never and I mean EVER[/b] spend out $60-100 just for a tank of gasoline, I bought another new scooter for cash out the door with no other expenses owed anually or otherwise instead of going in debt for a car I can no longer afford.

Actually,
I have both: a Kawasaki ZR-7S(750) motorcycle, and a Yamaha Majesty scooter.
The ZR-7 is fast, fun, and rides nice on the highway. It will easily cruise at 90 mph, and top speed is somewhere around 130. Add the soft saddlebags, tailbag, and luggage rack, and it hauls quite a bit, too. I've gotten 55 mpg if I didn't push it too hard. With the 5.8 gal tank, you can go 250 miles between fill ups. But around town is a different story. Constantly shifting, riding position is slightly forward which puts more weight on your arms at slower speeds, you can't lock the soft lugagge. Slow speeds are bothersome, because the center of gravity is fairly high. And the mpg drops to lower 40s.
The Majesty is great for in town. No shifting, full wind screen, easy handling at low speeds, upright seating position, 16 gallons of underseat storage, the tail trunk I installed holds 44 liters(and it locks!). Acceleration is better than the average car, at least up to 65 mph or so. Top speed is somewhere around 100, but that's not what the Majesty is designed for. It also gets 52-53 mpg, and that's 80% city driving, stop-n-go. I haven't taken it on a long road trip yet. Scooterlizard tells me she get about 60 mpg on the freeway. Did I mention it has lots of lockable storage? ;D
I like both bikes. Each has it's own purpose. But lately I find myself getting on the Majesty more and more..........
