Ole Yeller is going to have some company. I just bought a beautifully maintained 2007 SYM RV250 for $2,700. The scoot has only 2,100 miles on it and looks brand new. I think I got a pretty good deal.
So far I've only ridden the scoot around the block at the seller's house. It is certainly different than the Bali. Quieter, much heavier, with all sorts of bells and whistles like 55W halogen lights. Looking forward to taking it on the freeway.
Yellers been great, but she is getting water in the oil. The deal on the SYM came up and I couldn't resist. Gary

Congratulations Gary: The SYM RV250 is a strong contender for my next scooter, $$ is always the trump card. That is a great deal, I hope you have years of trouble free miles.

Harry - It takes a thief to know a thief. I know what you paid for your Xpeed:) Allworld - I was surprised to see the bargains out there in almost new scoots. The '07 majesty I looked at and almost bought was absolutely showroom new, only 1,200 miles on it. The asking price was $3,400 plus a $200 dealer prep fee which I think I could have negotiated out. That's pretty remarkable for a $6,000 machine. There's a pretty cool video review of the SYM here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wz-F7Dyy4awI really want the optional forward pointing cannon. Gary

Gary congratulations. You will not be disappointed I'm sure. You'll miss old Yella, but at other times you wouldn't. I guess by now you have the factory workshop manual downloaded. If not I could help you as I have a copy. No more searching for info my friend. Everything at your fingertips and even a list of part numbers. Before I bought my Citycom the shop owner gave me the contact number for an RV250 owner that commute into the city from a little town west of here. When I spoke to him he had 16000kms on in less than a year with no issues at all. He had only praise for the machine, just like I have for the Citycom. I am impressed everyday, even like today when I fiddle with it (putting on a custom alloy heat shield for the exhaust as the factory one is ugly and stands out to far - had a few knocks) Looking forward to read of your experiences. SYM miles of SYM smiles to you. ;D ;D kiwiscoot in the grip of winter

Thanks all.
Anhoa - If the 150 meets your needs, stay with it. There is a lot to be said for air cooling! I was just wanting to get something that was a tad more freeway-capable than my Viva.
Kiwi - thanks for the kind words. The scoot exudes quality. It is so well-equipped with good lights front and rear, etc, I can't imagine much of anything I'd want/need to change. The windshield is small though (even for short me), so I'd like to get a bigger one. Where did you get yours?
Thanks, Gary
PS: Kiwi - stay warm.

Anhoa, If you get that Xpeed it will take wrong turns and you will end up in the mountains of New Hampshire and Vermont. I can get to the corner store on my 50cc in 3 minutes. Takes almost an hour on the Xpeed.

Congrats Gary on the new SYM, and the great deal you got. The bigger windscreen is almost a must. I got mine from Power Sports World (334-735-9761) they are in Alabama, right near Carter Brothers, the importer for SYM. Windscreen was less than $200 delivered to my house. I get all my parts through them direct to my house, good prices and fast service. I am over 8000 miles on mine now, bought a new belt, air filter, brake pads and replaced the spark plug. Have an appointment 17th to replace my back tire, with Michelin Gold Standards (have already waiting in garage). Still so far, knock on wood, no issues at all with scooter. Starts 1st push with the start button. The brake pads and belt are still in the box, both were still good on my scooter. Good luck with your scooter, you will probably love it as much as I do.

Jim - Thanks for the useful info. I take posession of the scooter this evening. I'm quite excited!
Is the bigger windscreen strudier than the stock one? It seems to me that the stock wind screen is a bit flimsy, quite unlike the rest of the scoot which seems solid and well-made.
Thanks again, Gary

The windscreen is about the same thickness, the top will flex alittle at 60mph+. I am 6'2" and the wind barely hits the top of my helmet at 65mph, I am about 3-4" above the top of windscreen (eyes are). Mt wife is 5'6" actually has to look through her windscreen. It does have the SYM logo on which is nice, and took me about 20-30 mins to complete the swap out. Here is a comparison shot, blue with bigger windscreen, red without (since changed out with bigger) but has a Laminar lip on it.

Thanks Jim. I'm more your wife's size and don't want to look through the shield, so if I do get the larger shield I may have to cut some of the bottom off and put in new mounting holes. Think that is do-able?
Also, SYM is coming out with a taller wind screen for the 250 at the end of this month. Maybe it is the same as the one you have, but supposedly, these are new.
Thanks again, Gary

I knew this was coming. From reading your post I knew you were in the market to buy a new bike. As much as you tried to deny it, to us it was apperent. Best of luck. I haven't been riding much lately, and am still holding out for next generation of bigger engined scoots. Sym and there teflon coated engine should give you years of riding pleasure.

Yes, I got the "itch" to buy a new bike a while ago. It took me a long time to pull the trigger because Ole Yeller was running great. Just lately though, she's showing water in the oil, so I figured she'd be down for a while for repair. That was the straw that broke the camels back, so to speak.
Rode the SYM home yesterday. Oh my, what a ride. Super stable, very comfortable on the freeway. Had it up to 80mph (indicated) with plenty of throttle left. I'm anxious to see what sort of gas mileage I get. I expect it may be better than the Bali, due to the more advanced engine.

Gary I got a Givi screen. The big advantage above the SYM factory windscreen is that it is crystal clear with no destortions. My factory windscreen is very ripply and has a lot of destortions. Did not bother me until I got the Givi one. Here is a screen that's sold in the USA sym-usa.com/news/?p=58=1It has more wind protection for one's hands than my Givi screen has. Better in my book. Going by the photos it doesn't look as tall as the Givi one, which should suit you better to. I hope it has no destortion as it does make a big difference. SYM fun to you.

How was the pie?

Post by Gary on Jul 13, 2009 17:59:04 GMT -5
Harry - No pie yet, but some great riding. I'm pretty happy I did not go for the Burgman or Majesty. I think they would have been Too Much Scoot for me. Even the SYM is a lot of machine. I find it hard to call it a scooter. It seems more like an automatic motorcycle with storage. I think maybe the Xpeed is a bit more scooter-like.
The ride and power of the SYM are fantastic, but the windshield really sucks. It directs a blast of wind right square at my chest. All I can say is good thing its summer .... I'd freeze my a$$ off in winter.
I was super-impressed with the shield Cee Bailey made for my Bali so I contacted them about the Sym. Unfortunately they don't make a Shield for the RV-250, but they said they would consider working with me to develop one. I'd have to supply digital photos and my existing shield so they could copy the mounts. Frankly I think there may be less wind blast on my head and chest without the existing shield than with it, so giving up the shield for a while may not be a problem.
I'm also going to check with Givi, as Kiwi suggested.
I'm the meantime I'm riding with a face shield on my helmet to keep the bugs out of my teeth:)

I have the HD 200, which by all accounts is faster than the 250 (this from folks who have ridden both). I am amazed at the power and speed of the HD 200 Sorry, but no more Chinese scoots for me. I have seen the light. I have the big Givi windscreen for the winter, and a retrofit to the Givi mounts Scoot 66 for the summer. You got one of the very best bikes on the planet. And there is no turning back.

I'd like to try an HD200. Looks like a fun scoot.
I had a great time with my Bali. Learned so much. I think I will try and fix her. She's a fun around town bike.
The RD250 is pretty awesome though. Way better on the freeway....

WIndshield on the Xpeed leaves a bit to be desired as well.
3/4 face works well enough on the Bali...but Xpeed it's full face for anything over 35 MPH.
Mrs's used to make stained glass windows for rich folk..been promising to make me a new windshield.

For me it is a wierd feeling steering the SYM. I'm used to the Bali, where the mirrors and shield move with the handlebars. Move the handlebars, and the mirrors and shield point to where the scoot is going to go. On the SYM, you turn the handlebars and evrything stays fixed, no feedback. The nose of the scoot carves a turn different than where the handlebars point. I'm getting used to it, but it feels really different. This must be true for all Reflex-style scoots.
The suspension on the Sym is really stiff. Not bone-jarring, but almost. I like it that way. I know the rear is adjustable - I might play with the settings. My guess is the guys who ownd the scoot before me had it set up stiff so they could ride two up. But again, I like it on the stiff side. My Bali was getting pretty soft - I'm sure the shocks are wearing out.
Poor Ole Yelller is just sitting in the garage. I'mgoing to have to have aweekend project one of these days, pull the engine and work on the water in the oil problem. Probably should put her up for sale o she gets in the hands of someone who will use her. My son's 150 has a bad oil leak also, so I've got some work to do ....
