Hi! I'm looking for some help! I have a friend that has a Gator 50cc scooter that is his only form of transportation. Last Thursday night, the belt broke on his way home from work. He ordered a replacement belt and put it on last night. Now the scooter will not crank. Any ideas on why it is not cranking? He says that it acts like it wants to turn over, but it doesn't start. He was going to check the battery tonight. Any suggestions would be appreciated...

did the belt shred up and possibly get wrapped around the clutch shaft?

How many miles did he have on it?

Does it kick start OK? He should also check the area around the starter drive (Bendix) and the little gear at the end of the starter which engages the starter drive to make sure that there is nothing jamming it up. 66

when a belt breaks.its best to take it all apart and clean everything you see in that pic above.

Yow. That's not a very failure-friendly design, with the starter running off the outside of the variator.
I'd be trying the starter with the belt cover off, watching for indications that the solenoid was still operating freely, shaft wasn't bent, etc. Could be as simple as belt dust or debris locking up the starter.
