I walked out to my scooter yesterday and noticed something familiar in the MC parking area. In case you missed it: It looks like a Suzuki Burgman scooter

Well I guess it was bound to happen sooner of later; I got caught in the rain while riding the scooter. I started working at this part time job with the IRS during the evenings and last night around 12:30am I started my commute home. It's normally a 30 minute drive from south Austin to Hutto. It was in the high 60's when I got out of work and very windy. I had checked the weather all day and even thou there was a 20% chance of rain, it was forecasted that most would be to the east of Austin. About halve way home I started to see lighting and the sound of thunder. Not good. Then I started to see little streaks on my face shield. No sooner did I start to wonder what the stuff was when I drove into the rain. It was my first time driving in the rain. It was very windy and the temp had dropped into the low 50's. The good thing was that I had my new jacket on, kept me dry and somewhat warm. The bad thing is my pants and shoes got wet. I was on the highway going around 65 when the rain started. The scooter handles the wet roads very well. I dropped the speed down to 60 then made my normal exit. I did go a lot slower then I would normally drive but at 12:30 in the am there is not too much traffic so that made it a little bit easier. All in all it was a good learning experience.

Rain always makes the ride more interesting. Glad you kept your cool and took it more slowly. better alive and wet than the alternative.

like your cartoons. A bit like me when I bought my riding gear. In pouring rain I thought I had to check them out. Did a 160km ride, well after the 50km mark the water started to get inside, at 80km mark I was getting soaked, but at the point of no return, at 160kms well soaked thru and thru wet & miserable. ;D What are the differences between the 500 GT and the 2006 500ie. a nice ABS 500ie here for sale in my city www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Motorbikes/Motorbikes/Scooters/auction-335808338.htmwhat are your experiences? positive?? maintenance - cheap or expensive?? kiwiscoot

Kiwi, that 500ie weighs in at about ten pounds more than your Citycom and is running almost twice the hp, the difference between the scarabeo gt and the 500ie is about 100 lbs I believe but the Gt is very stable on the interstate. Sorry for jumpin your thread rubi .

Sorry for jumpin your thread rubi . flyangler's information is correct. The 500ie is the new model. A little more refined with the same 500 master engine. It also looks a lot different than the GT. From my understanding the GT was sold here in the US from 2004 to 2006 (06 only year that had ABS) with the IE being sold in 2007... Picture of a Scarabeo 500 IE: My experience has been very positive with my 500 GT. I have had no real issues since purchasing it. I have only performed some minor maintenance. The most expensive being the switching of the variator rollers to Dr. Pulley sliders. I looked at the link that you included in your post for the 06 Scarabeo 500. It's not an IE but it does look very nice. If you add the GT hard cases it will look even better.

Hey Great Big guru Dawg! I bought my 2006 Beo 500 GT ABS in Sept 2010 with 2400 miles on it. I've put about 500 on it so far and love it! Do you still have yours? Do you still like it? Can't believe how easy it is to go too fast! Dr Taz

Congrats on the purchase of 06.
I still have mine and love the power of the 500 engine. I use it to commute to work when I don't have to take the kids to school.
I am finally getting ready to purchase the J.Costa Variator. I should be getting in early January. I will take pics of the installation.
Lots of cops here in Austin so I have to keep my speed in check!

Congratulations on your purchase!
The 2003-2006 Scarabeo 500 look like mine, more of a cruiser look, a little on the wide side. The 2007 and newer models have the same 500 master engine but are more refined. They are a little thinner and lighter with a smaller tire in the rear.
They did keep the same stylish Scarabeo look though.

Just a update on the Scarabeo, I have had this issue with my battery that started back in September of last year. It started acting up when I accidentally left the key in the on position with the parking lights on for a couple of hours. After that the battery just would not keep a good charge. Since then, I have to keep the battery connected to the battery tender in order for the scooter to function properly. I did not use the scooter much in January or most of February. I did start the scooter every now and then to make sure everything was still working OK. On Monday I drove my scooter to work. After getting out of my morning job, the scooter started just fine. I drove down the street and stopped at a Walgreens. When I was getting ready to leave I realized that the battery was not strong enough to get the scooter started. No problem, since the scooter had left me stranded back in September I started to carry my Black & Decker jump start battery pack with me. I jumped my own scooter and off I went. I started to notice my EFI light start to flash when I would stop at signal lights or when I would slow down in traffic. After a while I also noticed some hesitation. I was able to get to work OK even with these issues. I got home ok that night even though the EFI light kept on flashing. With all these problems I decided to finally give up and just buy a new battery. Battery compartment (not mine scooter): Here is my old battery: Being that the battery fits very snug in the compartment, I had to make sure to get the right size battery. I went to AutoZone and after looking at all their motorcycle batteries, we could not find one that exactly matches the size of my old battery. They were either too wide or had the positive/negative poles reversed (the pos/neg cables are very short). I tried Wal-Mart and had the same issues. One other thing to note here is that all their batteries had to have the acid poured in and be fully charged before you could use them (like when I got my china scoot). I went home a little frustrated. I figured this would be an easy task, just go in and get an exact replacement. I went online searched the Battery Plus web site. I entered the model number of my old battery and it quickly cross-referenced it with a model they carry. I called the local store and sure enough they had it in stock. I drove by the store and swapped my old battery for the new battery. The kicker here is that the price of the battery was the same as my local AutoZone and the battery came ready to install. New battery: They had two models to choose from, a one year warranty and a two year warranty. The difference in price was 10.00. Got home and installed the battery and the scoot started right up. It even sounded a lot better (it might have been just me though). I drove it to work last night and I am glad to report that the scoot is working great. With gas prices getting close to 4 dollars a gallon, I am glad to have it running again.

I have a 2005 Aprilia scarabeo 500gt. I bought it second hand for $2500.00 and when I bought it it had a dead battery and would not take a charg. I got a replacement at advanced aut. it started right up. It had about 5000 miles on it whene I bought it, and I have put 200 more on it after I put in the battery 2 mounths a go. Now the battery is down to about 10.7 volts. I can charg it and it will go for about 2 weeks b4 needing a charg again. I to must carry a jump start to mine is a stanly though . My EFI light does come on 4 about 30 sec when I start it . other than that it has ran great.

My EFI light does come on 4 about 30 sec when I start it . other than that it has ran great. I was doing a little reading on the low volts and it looks like you might have some problems with your voltage regulator. Quote: Voltage regulator problems are going to give symptoms of either over-voltage or under-voltage. Typically a 12V battery that is being properly charged will show a voltage of between 13 and 14 volts. 14.5 volts is probably indicative of a regulator that is providing too much voltage and has failed.
On the other hand if the battery voltage falls below 12V then it is most likely not being charged. That doesn't mean that a problem exists if the voltage indicates below 12V when the engine is idling. However if the battery voltage is below 12V when the engine is up to speed, and the voltage continues to fall, then the battery is discharging, and is also indicative of regulator failure.
My voltage displayed on the MFD is usually 14V while the engine is running above idle (13.7 with my Gerbing heated jacket liner and gloves on), and will slowly drop during idle to around 11 volts.
If you use the Aprilia regulator it will cost you about 160.00 (from AF1). Some people have used the a Honda CBR 1000 Voltage Regulator and have had great success with it. It will take some rewiring to get it to fit in the Aprilia.

Talk about fast shipping. I place an order with AF1 on Wednesday the 16 and received the ups package on the 17th.
I know that AF1 is located about 1 hour from my house but still that is some fast packing of the individual parts and sending the package out the door.

While it is encouraging to hear of your experience with their parts department at AF1, I keep reading about problems with oil pump gears stripping which leaves me concerned about picking up a 450lb lawn ornament. Have you heard anything about this issue on the 03 and 04's? It could be a fun project as long as my current 150 continues to hang on.

I change my oil on the scooter every 6 months and have not had any issues (I did knock on wood after I typed this).

If you bought an aprilia scarabeo 500 and it did not have the third brake light connected, you can follow these instructions: You will need to run some wires from the third brake light to the back of the scooter under the seat. Open up the seat and you will see an area that is used to perform maintenance to the air filter. It is held down with some screws. Remove the screws and open the plastic lid. You should see the door that holds the air filter. Around this area you will see some wires that are not connected to anything. My cables were taped off. Check these cables to make sure that when you press the brakes, it activates the power to one of the cables. Here are some pictures of another owner who did the same thing. Third brake light. Remove the light and run the wires to it. Run the wire thru the case: Run the wire to the bottom of the case: Here is a picture of where he connected his lights. Working light:

Up above I had posted some pictures of a trailer I was working on. In the above pictures you can see the frame build up. Well I finally finished the trailer. Just in time for our spring break camping trip that we took back in March 17. Here is a picture of the completed trailer: (taken with my phone, not the greatest quality) I still need to paint it a nice silver color. I only had time to spay on some gray primer before the trip.

The bike was dumped and now has a broken drive belt and will not turn over or even click even with a freshly charged battery although the dash does light up when you turn the key. My fear was an engine seizure from the oil pump issue led to the dumping. The crash bars on this Atlantic with 27,000 miles on it protected the body very well however it has sat over a year without starting. Do I roll the dice that the engine is not toast or walk away like most people already have is the big question.
