In NM we have an unusual law. Under 16, you must wear a helmet, over 18 you don't have to. Now the helmet messes up my hair, is a pain in the ass to take on and off (still haven't gotten fast with the fingers) but I wear it EVERY time I ride. My loved ones wouldn't have it any other way.

I wear a full face helmet all year round...don't have to but choose to. Keeps the bugs out of my face in summer and the stones thrown up by trucks and cars don't hurt nearly as much. Offers protection and warmth in the winter and protects my eyes which are needed to operate my scoot. I am afforded a certain amount of anonymity under my helm and a feeling of protection that should I fall, my face may well remain intact...but that's just me. Law or no law my choice is to wear a helmet whenever I scoot.

We as motorcylists are considered foolish daredevils . That will never go away . over 50% of all AUTOMOBILE deaths are from head injuries , A HIGHER percentage than motoorcylists . Yet it will be a cold day in hell before there is a helmet law for driving your automobile... Jake PS yes I think you should wear a helmet

Let's be real for a second here, Helmet will protect you in an event of a crash. But, it also depends on how you got hit. If your wearing a seatbelt and think that you are safe, yes, of course. Again, it also depends on how the accident happen.

Full face for me. my coworker and I got our scooters last summer when gas hit $4. On her 2nd trip out, she didn't make the turn after a stop. She hit the curb and went over the bars onto a sidewalk. She showed me the cuts and bruises that were "decent" to show including cut gums and a bruised face. I hate to think what would have happened to a pretty lady if she hadn't been wearing a full face. She's a believer.
I love to ride country roads in the evening. One night I crossed a bridge over a major stream and blew through an enormous mayfly hatch. Cleaning up the scooter and helmet visor were bad enough. I'm glad I was full face.

what do you call a person who doesn't wear a helmet?
An organ donor
this is why I will always wear a helmet
I have been married for almost 13 years....my wife is too young to be a widow and I am old enough not to care if I look cool enough in a helmet or not

Loganhes - Amen to that. Down there where you live, I'd go for full body armor. I'm getting old and the brain probably isn't running on all its megabytes of memory but I'd prefer to keep it intact.

Astroprof,
Not that bad around here. One of the biggest problems is being that we are a suburb of Philadelphia, we often get the Philly drivers with no insurance in our area. If one of those people hit you it is going to be an insurance nightmare.

For sure. When I worked for Big Ed's minions, I had to go to Philly, Chester and Norristown for meetings. I can't see how people down there deal with the traffic and other drivers. Harrisburg was bad enough. Ride Safe!

Again, it also depends on how the accident happen. The problem with not wearing a helmet isn't weather you end up dead or not...plenty of deserving people in need of organs. The wife and children will be sad for a while, but the life insurance will pay off and eventually someone new will take your place. The problem is what happens if you live...but your brain has been turned to mush. Now your loving wife ends up taking care of a retard/vegetable for the rest of her life.

Nickie, If you'll permit me to say so, I am a bit miffed by your generational slam on people who have managed to survive past their 40th birthday. I am approaching 70, and have been riding motorcycles and scooters since about 1964. I have been down on my bike once in all that time. I can still see remarkably well, tho I am slightly far-sided; I have a high-frequency hearing loss from years of ham radio operation, using a test set at work, and shooting; I have been in my share of places when other people wished to be there also, but have never mistaken a clutch pedal, a brake, or a gas pedal for anything other than what they are. If you had a near miss with a vehicle ahead of you that was only moving 10 mph, perhaps it occurred in a parking lot, perhaps you were tail-gating that lady, perhaps she was reacting to something you couldn't or didn't see at the time. She is responsible for what she may run into not what you who were following her failed to do or not. While I appreciate the work you do with incapacitated people, please do not think less of those of us who work to maintain our facilities and strive to keep the roads safe for all age groups. I don't mean to offend you, please don't offend. Garyr
