Hi, Just joined today and this seems like a great forum!
I've got a Big Chief (pics below) 2 stroke 50cc that is running pretty well. The speedo is saying I am hitting 40-45mph bone stock (yea right!). I'm gonna check that with GPS soon. I have a few observations and questions for you gurus out there...
Any idea what engine I've got? I'd like to start tweaking for performance, but can't start until I figure out what I'm working with. I'd like to find a service manual for whatever engine I've got, if there's one out there.
I downloaded the GY6 service manual and found that my frame, hardware, panels, basically everything except the running gear is nearly identical to the scooter in the manual. I'd like to swap out my instrument cluster for a better/newer unit. My gas gauge is not very accurate at all. It stays stuck on F for a while after refill, then drops like a rock from 1/2 tank to E. Seems like I should be able to swap out components since the hardware is very similar across most of these chinese scooter models. Any good sources for panels, instruments, etc? I've checked a few of the links listed on the main scootdawg page, and they really don't have much in the way of body panels, instrument clusters, etc.
Here are my initial impressions from reading the forums so far:
1. Increasing air flow is good. UNI type air filters are better than the stock box filters. Question: Does rain bother these filters? Seems like they would get wet in the rain just sitting there without a box or something around them.
2. Roller swap is a cheap way to get noticeable performance gains. My take so far: heavier weight = less accel off the line, but higher top end.
3. I don't know if my scooter is limited or not, but swapping out the CDI(sp?) can help in several different ways.
Has anyone swapped out a 2 stroke 50cc for a GY6 150cc? I've seen the motors listed for $400-500 and that might be an option instead of pumping a bunch of money into my 2 stroke 50.
Here's the pics of my baby:

thanks in advance! Oh, anyone ever get to NC on road trips? I'm less than an hour from THE DRAGON... very, very, fun stretch of road!
