Someone had emailed me about having problems filling their scooter engine with new coolant after draining it. A MC54-250B like mine with the Linhai engine. Anyone have any words of wisdom on performing this task? I know it can turn into a PITA sometimes. I am trying to remember what I did, but sometimes years of experience gets in the way, and I just do it, without thinking that the things I did would be important tips to someone else. Thanks

Earl, I had no problems draining and refilling my Mainstreet 300. I do think it's wise to leave the radiator cap off while doing this because when it burps to get the air out you need to add more distilled water or coolent. Also you may get burned taking a cap off a hot radiator.I also used my shop vac to suck out additional coolent after it stopped normal drainage. I reheated the the engine each time till the temp gage indicated the thermostat was open. It took about 3 drains and refills before all the old stuff was gone and I added new 50/50. Of course, don't forget the coolent recovery tank and make sure you get system completely full of your 50/50 the last time. I think it took about and hour, but I took my time. Oldkid

I let mine run with the cap off (the hose in it on very low), and the drain plug out and it only takes about 10 minutes to get all the old stuff out. I also use a shop vac connected to the top hose to drain the reservoir tank.
Yesterday, I was at Wal*Mart, and in the auto section, and they had a neat little squeeze bulb with a hose on either side (siphon) for only $2.96, so I got one. It'll be quicker to drain the reservoir tank, rather than taking off the top hose and using the vac...

It isn't any different than the CFMoto engine. As Oldkid said, you have to be certain to purge the system of air. Yamaha refers to a vent screw at the carb that you remove to burp the system but I didn't need to do that and haven't yet looked to see if we have one on the Linhai.

Oh yeah, and manual burping makes the fill go much faster. Squeeze (very quick and hard) the bottom hose a dozen or so times and then repeat on the top hose. Once the scoot takes no more fluid, cap it and go for a good ride, and then after it cools, check it again.

Ollie, I have the vent screw on the carb hose... just can't get to it! (CFMoto)

Rich, I purchased that same pump at Walmart. I used it on the Mainstreet, but also used it on my truck and car to empty the coolent recovery tanks. I may try your drain method next time. It sounds easiler unless thermostat won't stay open. Thanks for the tip. Oldkid
