It's time for me to change the oil (first time) on my new 2006 Kymco People 250 scoot. I can get at the drain plug OK, but why the drain plug is on the side instead of the bottom is beyond me. I can get at the oil screen holder OK too, which is on the bottom where I feel the drain plug should be.
My question is: How do you drain the oil from the side drain plug and not get oil all over everything (the floor, the main stand parts and dripping from all parts of the crankcase)?
Or would it be easier, and cleaner, to drain the oil by removing the oil screen holder instead of the side drain plug?
Both of these drains are situated so you can't get a normal funnel under them in such a way that there will be no spillage --- or am I missing something?

I have a Yamaha Majesty that is the same. I just undo the the oil screen and let it fall out the bottom. I use an old antifreeze container to catch the oil. Just cut out one side big enough to let the oil drain into. Leave the lid on so the oil won't run out, when done just undo the lid and pour your use oil in to a recycle container. The screen has a spring to hold it in, so be careful when unscrewing the cap or you will have parts go everywhere.
If you are not living on the edge, you are taking up to much space.

I've got a 2007 People 250, and I use an old bucket that used to hold children's sidewalk chalk to catch the oil...it's just low enough to go under the drain plug. Use a deepwell socket (17mm) and an extension. Do not use the included tool with the Kymco toolkit..it is junk. I unscrew the oil dipstick, the side drain, and then the screen plug (use a 17mm box end wrench). Make sure that you run the engine for a few minutes before draining. It's intimidating for your first change, but after that, it becomes second nature. Ride Safe!

marklorenzi: I just bought one of the Fleetwoods. They look like a clone of the Honda XRM's they sell overseas. It is in transit now and I should get it this week. I will try to post my experience here. Call me the guinea pig hahaha.
