I am moving to Florida next month. I believe the 50cc scooter does not require a motorcycle endorsement, and no Insurance. What about the 150cc scooter? I really don't want to be bothered with an endorsement and Insurance. If that's the case, I might as well go out and buy a Harley.

I just hope that you and everyone else here doesn't cause a wreck. I don't carry insurance on my scooter for the value of it, I carry bodily injury/property damage liability insurance in case I am sued. If you are at fault in a wreck, the other person can sue and probably will sue you for medical, pain and suffering, etc...

You cannot ride a 150 anywhere in the U.S. without a motorcycle endorsement or insurance. When i lived in FLorida in 2007 i did have to have a motorcycle endorsement and registration, license plate but insurance was not required unless i wanted to ride without a helmet. idk if the laws have changed since then its been a while

Scooters and Mopeds Published 12/02/2011 01:35 PM | Updated 04/04/2012 02:17 PM Do I need a motorcycle endorsement and driver license to ride a scooter or a moped? And does it have to be registered? Mopeds, scooters and other two or three wheel motor vehicles that are 50 cc or less are not motorcycles by legal definition, so a motorcycle endorsement is not required.
However, they are a motor vehicle, so to operate them on streets and roadways, you must be at least 16 years old and hold at least a regular operator's license(Class E) or "Motorcycle Only" driver license. Mopeds and gas powered scooters are not to be operated with a Learner’s license, regardless of age.
A helmet is not required for the operator riding a moped or scooter. Any passenger under 16 years old, must wear a helmet.

One big law they're tough on down here is to atleast have some sort of eye protection. $126 ticket for no glasses/sunglasses.

Got to tell ya , thats why I sold my boat. Too many rules and guidelines. It just was not worth it. I'm starting to think the same about the scooter. Is it worth it?

Is it worth it? of course. There are not that many rules. Plate and tag it, put on some sunglasses and your good. Not like there asking something unreasonable from you.

Anything over 50 cc requires motorcycle endorsement , no proof of insurance is needed to get a tag . You can not get a tag for 150 cc without endorsement .

Thanks again for all the information. Decided to go with the BMS Heritage 50cc for my wife and I.
If it does not provide enough power, I will consider installing the big bore kit. The kits prices are very reasonable.

Yes, you can get a license tag for any 2-wheeler without a motorcycle endorsement. The DMV needs just a regular drivers license and does not require proof of insurance to process documentation

The kits prices are very reasonable. Once you up the CC's past 50 you will need an endorsement. People caught riding without an endorsement have their bikes impounded and have to take and pass the MSF riders course before they can get their bike back. The police are not stupid here and will figure it out if you blast past them at 50 MPH on what is tagged as a sub 50cc bike. If they run you through the system and do not find a Motorcycle endorsement on you License then get ready to hear the fat lady sing. Half the students at the MSF class I took were there because they got caught and had to take the course to get their bikes out of impound. The rules and laws for the most part are just good common sense. Much easier than picking something good for you at a fast food establishment. Buy a Harley for $25,000 over a $1,600 scooter if you have to get a $200 to $300 MSF endorsement?

I am guessing if I update to a big bore kit, its not very likely the police are going to stop a couple of seniors doing the speed limit. The extra power will benefit riding two people or going upgrade.

Several dealerships will include the cost of the MSF class in the cost of a bike or scoot. I don't see an issue, a buddy of mine rode a Harley for years, got caught and had to take the class. According to him he realized he had a couple of bad habits and the class "cured" him of those. So what the hell...get endorsed. The insurance for me was less then $200 for 12 months. Have fun, enjoy and just ride.

I am a staunch advocate for the MSF course. I firmly believe that everyone who rides should take it. This is just my personal belief.
Motorcycle and scooter riding, while fun, are based on a skills that have to be taught. Sure, you can jump on one and ride it and hopefully figure out the correct and safe way to ride eventually, but it is much easier and safer when you have someone to teach you who already knows the proper steps.

Yeah the MSF course is actually pretty fun aside from learning some new things. Theres alot of places that offer scooters as their bikes if you dont wanna ride anything bigger during the course.

It makes life easier on everyone when all are law abiding and pull together to make our communities a safer place to be.
