I think skuuadawg has the right idea with the 80 crate engine, the cost for a replacement kit is going to be about 1/3rd the cost for a new engine. New 49 cc engines run around $319 for the complete deal, I wouldn't spend $125 or whatever on a cylinder and piston when I can get the whole thing new ready to roll for only $190 or so more.

I've noticed there's kits with 64mm valves and 69mm valves. How do I know which one I should get?

Sooo, after a closer inspection of my piston, I discovered one of the rings was broken in half. Problem solved! Haha
I'm also fairly sure that the dealer put in another defective Tao Tao piston after the first one went bad and I wouldn't be surprised if he used the same cylinder and didn't hone the bore... Yeah, I won't be going back there.
So what I think I'm going to do is buy a new 44mm piston and cylinder and head gaskets. Hopefully I don't have any more problems.

Rings can and do break, for a variety of reasons I guess, but there's your problem. One way a top ring breaks is if it hits the ridge at the top of the cylinder for some reason, or it's pulled up and out that way (as people do with cars often enough) The pics of your cylinder that I could see didn't look like it had been honed, on this page is a closeup photo of a honed cylinder so you can see what one looks like when it's freshly done; www.lro.com/forum3/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=33475

i had a 44mm installed by my dealer, I blew 2 pistons and stuck 2 sets of rings before 1000 miles. I switched to the 50mm piston and head and did it myself. Since then Ive gone another 1000 miles and no top end issues at all. And i dog the heck out of mine. Ive been having fun with the cvt lately.

Yeah I'm hoping the one I ordered is better quality than the one the dealer installed... And I'll probably do a better job installing it. Unfortunately the shipment got stuck in customs in China so its not going to be here for a couple weeks

Good news. I successfully installed the 44mm bbk kit. It fired right up and is running great so far...

that hone job looked very sloppy. Those pictures were of the bad cylinder that the busted piston screwed up.
