I ordered my Taotao 50 online from www.saferwholesale.com/category-s/31.htmon June 9, 2012. It was delivered on June 18, 2012. I have 273 miles on it now and just did its oil and gear lube change. I will be keeping mine pretty well all stock.

You just need an aftermarket variator and lighter rollers for those hills.

New to forum and to scooters: Just got a 2012 tao tao atm-50 4 stroke. I live in WV so alot of hills, I don't have power to climb. Any suggestions? looking @ 100cc BBK (is that too big?), aftermarket variator (don't know which one to get) and lighter rollers. Seen vids on derestricting. Has anyone done or should it be done? Also should I get an iridium spark plug? if so which one?

Could use more power on the hills myself. I would be interested in learning more about an aftermarket variator and find the correct one for my ATM50-A. Rather have more bottom end since the moped speed limit is 25 mph here.

I have the same scoot. It is not restricted. Try lighter roller or slider weights and/or a performance variator. I would also get a good quality belt and keep the stock one as a spare. Also look into different clutch springs and contra spring.

Thanks J3ffro! What do you know about BBKs. I was looking at ordering a 100 cc one but I don't want to burn my engine. Got any suggestions on what cc to go up to?

The 80cc ( actually 72cc) is a safe bbk to go with. From what I've heard these engines are designed to be a 72cc. Anything bigger could cause premature engine failure. But i guess it depends on how you ride. Running at full throttle will shorten engine life. Also engine maintenance is a key factor, change the oil sooner than later. It's easy to do and doesn't cost much and will ensure longer engine life. And make sure its jetted properly.

HELP....I got mine yesterday and CAN NOT get it to start. There are two large hoses on the right side of the bike. The larger one goes into the valve cover. The smaller was not attached to anything at one end. I put my finger tightly over the unattached end and the bike starts up and runs. I have to do that to start the bike or it just turns over and will not run. Does it attach somewhere? I looked but can't figure it out.

Bigworm; you can get all kinds if LED's on ebay, no problem, as long as you know how to use them and can figure the proper LED/resistor arrays. Or you can just buy 12volt strips or panels. You're right that you don't want to add any significant load to the barely adequate electrical supply. The other question to consider is local laws governing vehicle lighting. I wanted to do some LED's too, but Michigan says NO! Probably this should all be under it's own thread as it can rapidly become a big discussion.

that mod where u used the pcv pipe to get more air in.Is it true that u will burn your motor up quicker seeing its getting more air for engine but no real way of cooling it down thanks.

I live in PA,just got my ATM 50A1 last month.its been a process to get it registered, but i should have my papers in the mail soon. Have done a few mods already, like the PVC scoop for engine cooling fan.Attached a mount for 12v power, and attached a gps to the dash,although-i think im gonna move it to one of the mirror mounts. Just bought a bigger carb,jet,5g rollers, and a new CDI.SUPER EXCITED. Ill be doing all kinds of technology-related mods,as money allows. Not just for performance, but cool things and conversation-starter type mods.May even install some sort of Arduino-based automation for lighting effects, probably some sort of solar-powered devices/trickle charger, and maybe even turn the included trunk into a storage bay/landing pod for a Parrot AR drone. As you can tell,Im trying very hard to get onto HackADay.com lol.jk

Does anyone know where the spark plug is on these? Just bought a new one but can't find where it's located on the scooter. Just got mine a couple weeks ago. No problems yet except I think the front tire might be a little warped...

I just bought one of these 2 days ago to replace my finally dead scooter. Bought it brand new just out of the crate, dove it all the way home 51 miles and got it up to 47mph gps verified. Maybe a secret 63 again? lol I already ordered a BBK, cdi, coil and new carb and 6.5gr rollers. Lets see what it does after that lol It must be because I only get about 35 on flat ground. I did get to 50 mph once down a steep long hill. Goes about 25-30 up hill. Changed the oil, putting in new spark plug, put in star tron fuel treatment. We'll see how she does with time.

I just ordered my Taotao ATM50-A1 and have a couple questions if you guys wouldn't mind answering them.
Does the stock gear oil need to be changed out immediately like the engine oil?
What size hose barbs on the fuel filter and do I really need to replace the stock fuel lines as well as the filter?
Thanks in advance I've learned so much from lurking these forums!

Yes 3/16" barb will work fine. You don't need to replace the hoses.

someone asked above if you could change the jets on a stock carb...then someone said yes you can if you can open them...then the other peson asked if it was hard to do...here is where I come in..well i got a hold of a used stock carb from a 50cc scooter and completely unrestricted it..i was able to unseal the air fuel mixture screw and found a way to remove the carburetor bowl without destroying it. On these scooters the carburetor bowl is bolted down but they sheared of the bolt heads at the factory so theres no way to use any kind of socket or wrench on it. i used a hacksaw to create a line deep enough to use a screw driver to take those bolts off you wont notice any difference unless i point out the area i used the hacksaw even then it almost looks like something done at the factory . Please note that im barely going to test the new unrestricted carb tomorrow(friday October 12th) and im hoping for good results eventually i am getting a big bore kit and new carb so in a nutshell i was able to upgrade my carb for about 3 dollars and the carb itself looks good you wont notice anythig different than stock unless i point it out to you. if you want to know how i actually did it i will post a vid on youtube if it works out good.

Do any of you know if the 2012 models have the same issues as the 2011 models (running so lean that the engine overheats)?
Also, where can I buy a windshield, and is it advisable to put an aftermarket variator on it? (if it is, which one should I get)?

Plenty of reviews! Just check the 50cc subforums, and you'll read plenty! It's probably the most used scoot in USA at this moment.

The ATM50 has about the tallest gear possible in it. A spark plug change is unneccessary. Just unscrew the spark plug, and make the gap about 0.10" to 0.12" wide, and screw it back in. The stock plug is good enough for at least 4k miles!
Carb change is unneccesary on these scoots. Chances are you are only going to harm your fuel economy. The scoot already comes tuned with good A/F ratio's. My suggestion, break in the engine stock. Don't upgrade anything, until you got at least 500 km's on it.
If anything, make sure you fuel it with 93 oct fuel, or find a way to better cool the engine.

My ATM50 has about 343km on it. For my needs, a 150cc scooter would've been better, but I like projects so I bought this one knowing that I had to do so heavy modification to get it to operate the way I need it to.
These things are so easy to work on, i love it. I'm new to scooters in general, so I was thrilled to find out these things have their jack-stand type thing built into them. It took me about an hour and a half to take the engine out, install a BBK, change the rollers and oil, then re-install the engine. It's like having a project car but without the swear words when you work on it lol.
Problems: Before I replaced the stock carburetor, the scooter ran like absolute crap. As just about anyone else who owns one of these things, I recommend replacing it immediately. I went with the one from scrappydogscooters. Also, be sure to get some thread-locker before you assemble the scooter, and use it on all the bolts you have to put in. I also recommend taking out the mounting bolts from the front brake caliper and putting some thread-locker on those too. Just the other day my front brake caliper fell off while riding and I lost the bolts. I replaced them with M8-1.25 x 30MM ones with washers from Home Depot and they seemed to work just fine.
All-in-all I would recommend this scooter if you're willing to put some work into it. It might not be worth it if you don't want to, or can't, work on it yourself. But, again, I have only used this thing for 343km to go to campus and back so my words don't carry a hell of a lot of weight.
I do have a question though: Does a #90 main jet seem right for my set up, or does it seem like too much? My town is only about 400ft above sea level. Unfortunately when I went to automotive school they stopped teaching about carburetors and so I have very little experience telling if an engine is running rich/lean beyond smell and the obvious black smoke coming from the tailpipe. Any input would be great
