First I have no idea what I am doing. I got a New Tao Tao 50 scooter, replaced all the fuel lines, fuel filter, oil, and gear oil. Tried to start it and it would not start, so I bought new fuel, still no start. I finally took off breather cover and placed my hand over the intake to manually choke the thing and it finally started after several attempts. Now it will run but only if I keep a little throttle on it. It rides ok, but will start to bog down around 15 to 20mph. If i let out of the throttle it will build speed, but still difficult to keep running at idle. If it cools down, it will not start and i have to manually choke it (cover the darn hole) and it will crank.
Thanks for any and all help.

Sounds like you need to thoroughly clean your carb. Take it off and spray carb cleaner in every litle orifice you can find. These things get gummed up pretty easy. Then put a little sea foam in your tank.

First what kind of carb is on there, Is it a Carb with the Throttle Cable going into the TOP of the Carb or is the Cable on the Right side on a Bracket. The bogging should be able to take care of it by adjusting the Fuel Ratio or Air Ratio mixture but Need to know what kind of carb you have to tell you what to do and what screw. Wile

It's a standard CVK carb if it's a new Tao Tao 50.
On the top of the carb there is a metal/plastic circle with 2 screws. Remove them. Carefully pull up the rubber diaphragm. Make sure that the plastic "slide" can move up and down easily and is not sticking. My guess is that it is sticking so it will not give you the proper amount of fuel. It happens frequently. If it sticks, you can CAREFULLY sand down the outside of the plastic slider with 400-600 grit paper and water. You want it to slide up and down like glass. You cannot use lubricants as any gas will wash them away. It needs to slide smoothly when dry. Then when you reassemble the carb, make sure that the outside edge of the diaphragm is seated properly in the groove. It needs to lay FLAT. If it's rolled up a bit, sometimes you need to let it dry out in the sun where it will shrink a bit and then fit properly. If there is an air leak around the edge it will cause the needle to not lift up. Vacuum is what lifts up the needle so it is important to get a good seal.
Be careful with the needle. There are several versions. Some of them are screwed to the slider by a metal tab, but some are just slipped in with a white plastic "riser" that holds it down. It's those types that you need to be careful of because it's easy to lose the tiny pieces.

My new taotao 50 took a bit to get started initially when uncrated, and it would want to idle very slow and it would die if I even touched the throttle., and bumped the idle screw up 1/2 a turn. After that initial hassle it started fine, still wanted to die if I touched the throttle, but after it warmed up a bit it was good to go. Since then it's run fine (except if it's around 40 degrees or less outside, then once the auto choke comes off it wants to stall as these engines don't seem to like freezing weather at all- it was 19 degrees over night) I think it just has to get the carb cleared out and fresh 91 octane premium gas thru it, all the air out of the lines and the carb and it will run fine. The first starts I had used regular 87 octane gas, that could have been part of the problem, for once I switched to the 91 after changing the lines to new NAPA hoses, it started up immediately. I had also replaced the spark plug with an NGK, so if you havent done that DO IT NOW, those TT (torch) plugs are uber cheap. I took it out around town today about 6 km and stopped at the store, found the seat storage holds exactly one bag of groceries I just barely TOUCHED the starter and it started right up, so just do what's suggested here and run some good gas thru it a little bit and it should be fine. Im guessing the carb was just gummy and dried out from sitting in the werehouse, so once that's loosened up it should go fine, mine did.

I've had SEVERAL of the Torch plugs break in half. 3 had spark blowout on full throttle. Yes, they are crap.
The carbs are shipped with a clear anti-corrosion "varnish" inside that needs to be cleaned out. Sometimes if the carb was sitting for a while it turns into real varnish and clogs the jets. Sounds like you got it cleaned out. You may want to richen the mix a bit more. Also, run seafoam or fuel injector cleaner through the tank. I add STP each tankful (generally I premix STP fuel injector cleaner and Stabil into a 5gal jug that I use to fill our scooters) and it works great.

Sorry for long delay, work has been keeping me busy. Thanks for the help. Ok, I took the carb off and the fuel that came out of the bowl was foul, yes, off yellow and had the smell of creosol. So I took the carb off (It looks to be a CVK carb) sanded the slide (moves well) and cleaned the carb with can of carb cleaner. Looked fairly clean, but I did blow out a few pieces of junk. Reinstalled the carb. After it warmed up, seemed to have a low idle, adjusted that, but still will bog down. With it up on the stand I would get good throttle, but still bogging down between 15 and 20 mph when I try to ride. I did replace the plug with an NGK. Any other ideas beside gasoline and a Bic? ;D

If everyone who bought a brand new Tao Tao or Peace sports scooter would to three simple things they would rarely have a problem
Clean the carburetor.
Set the valves.
Replace the crappy stock Torch plug.
Replace the oil.
Ok, 4 things. Those are the absolute minimum that need to be done. Everything else is gravy. The Tao Tao and Peace Sports are actually pretty good scooters and its not necessary to replace the vacuum lines, though I still recommend it.

Thanks for those 4 things greg Looking up on how to change the oil later today! I might as well do my brake fluid too while I'm at it
