Hi! I am new to the scooter world I am a college freshmen and purchased a 49 cc tao tao scooter to get around. Currently I have about 590 km on my scooter, I ride it everyday and year round. This might be kind of a stupid question but I really am clueless when it comes to mechanics and everything, I still haven't changed the oil yet or any of the other fluids. I'm wondering what are some of the general numbers of km's I should be doing certain things at? Also if I could get links on how to do these that would be great!! Another question, as my scooter is outside pretty much everyday besides when were on break and it is in a garage, do you think it is worth investing in some sort of cover? Would that help protect it at all from snow/rain or is that not worth it? Thanks!
Mika

Hi Mikab, and WELCOME! You propably should do at least the bare essential's, if you don't do these things I am going to suggest you are looking at not having a healthy scooter for long. Your scooter needs to be "broken in" just like the automobiles of our fathers/grandfathers/great grandfathers (insert mother as well) of yesteryear, and during the first three hundred miles there will be pieces of metal that will be being ground off of your scooters engine, this is normal in breaking in these engines, also our engines do not have a normal oil filter as most vehicles do. Our scooter actually has a metal screen at the bottom of the engine, it is attached to the bolt that you remove to change the oil. It's just like the old air cooled Volkswagons, they had the same set up. So at three hundred miles you MUST change your oil to get rid of the metal shavings, otherwise the metal shavings can and will gouge out places in your engine thT shouldn't be gouged out, and then change it again (I think they say on that page thT was linked for you at 1000 miles) and both of these are with regular old Dino oil, after these first few changes you can and some say should use full senthetic oil. ThT one is up to you, you also should change out the rear gear oil as well, for the same reasons, and there is one other reason for these changes of fluids, the stuff from china is schite! That is the bare minimum for a new scoot for maintenance. Oh also ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS use the high test fuel for your scooter, otherwise you can seriously damage the engine.

Hi! I am new to the scooter world I am a college freshmen and purchased a 49 cc tao tao scooter to get around. Currently I have about 590 km on my scooter Mika Heys Same one I have, like the other said- change that oil and stuff ASAP, hope you didn't run it all this time on the original oil, I don't think that oil is very good at all and I changed it out immediately after test running it. I used castrol 10w30, as it only takes about half a quart it's cheap enough to keep changed frequently. Me personally, I always drain the oil out of an engine completely, and then dump a small amount of new fresh oil in while the drain is still open- maybe 1/2 a cup to a cup worth in a car, just to flush out the small amount of old dirty oil left in the very bottom of the pan. You'll see the last bit of old black oil drip out followed by the new golden fresh stuff, now you can screw the drain plug back in. Same with the gear case oil, I drained it all out and then using the pointed nozzle of the oil bottle I squirted in a quantity of oil with the drain plug open and let that drain out so it helps flush out all the old oil and any particles left on the bottom of the pan inside. As far as leaving the scooter outside, I don't like the idea of leaving it out in the rain, just seems best to avoid water and rust issues by keeping it under cover, you can't help a sudden storm when out driving, or something, but I'd say keep it covered from rain.

Hi I am wondering where I drain out the oil from the tank on my Hyosung Prima 49cc. Boy I sure have allot to learn about caring for my scoot! I am having lots of troubles right now. It won't start. It does roll over. Once and a while it will start and than if I don't give it a little gas it will stall out and if I do give it some gas it will also stall out about half throttle. I also have an issue with the key ignition. I have to wiggle the key to get it to catch and roll over. Sigh! I am new to all this and am trying to learn all I can to care for the scooter on my own.
