I'm glad you gave it a try! Sorry you weren't able to pull any wheelies though. LOL Just kidding, I think these little engines are too gutless for that!
When I take off I notice my clutch can't handle the extra power trying to get to the back wheel and slips more with only 3 roller weights than it did with the stock set-up - do you feel like yours is doing the same? I'm 180lbs so I'm guessing it may do it a bit worse for you.
Unfortunately, I've never seen softer clutch springs for sale and so I was thinking of adding a bit of weight to the 3 clutch pads to give them an earlier and more firm engagement - just because I'm too cheap to spring for either the MRP, KOSO, or HIT clutch.

You've got me thinking about whether or not my variator is fully closed at the same time I'm achieving top speed so I'm planning to rig up a mount for my video camera hoping we can watch the shifting action during a couple speed runs.
My feeling is that it shifts out well before top speed, even with only 3 rollers, but it'll be fun to see it all happen either way.

I'm not sure if it's slipping or just revving out because the variator needs more RPM to have enough centrifugal force to start throwing the rollers out.

We don't know at this point as you say. If I can ever find a handlebar mounted mini digital tachometer then we will know. I'll run the tests all over. I have a Joker/Carpi/il Bella style scooter and there isn't any room for a Tiny-Tach and it would look totally out of place. If it's all I can find I'll have to rig it up and remove it after the fact.

I wonder if a chrome autometer tach would work? If theres a way to wire one up, that wouldn't look outta place.

It took a month to get around to it, but I finally rigged up a bracket to hold my digital camera and made a short video of the CVT shifting. This was just a quick run down the street in front of the garage and the sun wasn't in the best spot so I'll make another one soon with better lighting.....so we can get a better look at the variator. I accelerated up to 65mph, held it for a bit and slowed back down. I think when the belt starts flapping around it's because of bumps in the road - pretty crazy looking! The quality is pretty poor so maybe I'll also use our newer camera next time.

That is so cool. It gives one ideas too. One could machine off most of the front and rear oif the outer CVT cover and run the CVT open for better cooling. Just like they do on the custom Big Harley's with the belt drive primary drive units. Keep the center section for the kick starter and maybe a porton over the front of the variator and the clutch bell.

I think there is one thing everyone forgets to mention. In my experiences as the roller weights get more light, the actual shift point becomes less noticeable. With a heavier weight you can feel and hear the engine RPMs change at the shift point. But as the weights become lighter, the shift point becomes less and less obvious. Anyway at least to me it does seem that way.

I can't help thinking how critical the alignment is between the 2 pulleys. Any misalignment would really tear up the belt.
