The problem is that most newbs don't do any research until their scooter breaks down so they don't even know how to ask the right question(s) or how to do basic troubleshooting like checking for spark. They say stuff like: "My scooter stopped running. It has gas in it but won't start. Please help!
Then we have to ask them things like "Does the engine try to start?" "Does it have spark?" etc...
Then they come back with stuff like "When I push the button it makes a noise but won't start. What's spark?"
Then you have to ask them what noise and explain how to test for spark and the damn thread goes on and on while you teach this rookie how his scooter works when he should have been Googling that sh!t instead of playing Gears of War for the last 6 months.
When I was a noob trying to solve an issue and I would go to Google and type in : How to ________
"How to test a GY6 stator" for instance will bring in lots of info. Usually links to multiple forum threads and videos even.
"How to clean a GY6 carb" "GY6 Spark Test" etc.... THOSE THREE MAGIC SYMBOLS: G Y 6 WILL OPEN UP ALL THE DOORS.
GOOGLE IS YOUR FRIEND!

FOX U R ABSOLUTELY 100% CORRECT ;D
but it all goes back to training or u can call it parenting .
people nowadays its the me 1st attitude.
i dont wanna read, learn how to work on my scoot i wanna ask a completely generic question--like " my scoot stopped running and won't start again" and expect the ONLY answer to fix their machine. they dont wanna hear--well do this , then that, then this, and then that. and hopefully that works.
they dont want that. they actually want either u to fix it for them for nothing or they want the one and only correct answer { even tho u are a 1000 miles away and cant even see or hear it}

I wasn't going to add to this but, Oh Well LOL
I have been around for awhile and have seen both sides of this discussion. I have to admit the "use the search function" answer to a post sometimes gets under my skin but, that is me. Not all folks know how to use a search function correctly and use the right search words to get the desired results. While others do fall into the "instant gratification" catagory. Hard to tell which catagory the poster falls into when they are new. There is one member who just answers with the word "Thread" and clicking on that word takes you to a related post or an answer.
I guess my bottom line would be: the majority of us come here for answers in the beginning, we get an answer, we learn, then we start helping others. That is what makes a great forum.

There are another reasons drawc To hang with "Like minded scooter enthusiast" ( Larry Crowne Movie )
Things you do at scootdawg. Played scooter tag game with other scooter enthusiast.
Create or join a Scooter Club. Some of the most fun I had was going to the Fort Wayne Scooter Club meetings on Sunday... Great bunch of people, we would go riding, often with no destination in mind..
Discuss pending or existing scooter laws and how they will effect us.
Discuss scooter safety, apparel, driving habits, safe road routes.
Make Friends ( The best one ) ;D ;D ;D These are but a few of the things other than free advice that happens here on Scootdawg.

Ban me for I am guilty of asking a lot of questions. In my defense I would like to point out that the search insists that I use 4 or more letter words. Other times trying to find specific posts discussing my exact problem with my exact ride are few and often not worded to come up on my search. There have been times when the search comes back with a message that the search is too long. I try once then it is far easier for me to ask my question about my Magnum in the Trike section and wait for other trike owners to post their advice than keep searching and searching for the answer. I'll be 70 in a few months so I don't have much more time on this earth. I'd like to send it doing something other than flattening out my butt while typing search phrases. ;D I hope you all have it in your heart to put up me. if not skip my posts or if you choose slam me. You won't hurt my feelings and if it makes you feel good slamming then I'll have done my good deed for the day. ;D

WAIT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I WANT MY SCOOTER TO RUN 38 MPH . GUESS I BETTER BUY A 150. Cause its going to cost to much to do any mods and i hate working on my scooter bla bla bla. Is it really so hard to think that we own a 50 cc scooter want to dream we can make it run 55 mph (wont happen) but its the hobby that gets us out of the house and every time we do anything at all to gain 3-5 more mph out of a 50 cc scooter were not just happy as hell

Phillip, I believe most here like helping others, that's not what the main complaint is.. The main complain i believe is that all the scooter mechanics here are volunteers. We are not paid, this is free help, not that we want paid, but we also have jobs and lives like every one else, and not every person here knows every answer to every question.. Many here are not mechanics at all, they contribute what they can when they can. and since scootdawg is more than just a help forum theirs something for every one to contribute if they want.
Those that aren't mechanics may tell someone to use the search in an effort to get help to the person asking the question, They aren't mechanics but have seen that problem before being asked knew the answer to the question is in the knowledge base.. So really posters should not be upset when asked to use the search function.. It's all an effort to get timely help to those in need. Even if they themselves don't know the answer.
I like helping others when I can, you should know that, but experienced mechanics can't be here 24/7 we have lives and need to make a living.... I understand people need answers to their problems, for I was one of them once... And even now i have problems that need answers, but I have learned to use the search function, it and it was a great benefit learning how to structure keywords to make efficient use of it...
Learning how to use the search function opened up all the knowledge on this forum 24/7 to me. Yes I can ask a question, and i know people here will do their best to answer them when they can, but if they are not on line and I don't have time to wait for an answer, their knowledge is still here and knowing how to use the search function opens it up to me.. No downside there...

Some of us were lucky and came home, some were not so fortunate. I remember coming home for Christmas in 1971 and my Dad saying put your uniform on and lets go to the bar and have a drink. In Ohio you had to be 21 to drink in a bar but, they did serve service members in uniform. Well, to make a long story short, we happen to come across a couple "hippies" who spotted me and said " there's one of those baby killers now". Well Dad ( a Marine Korea Vet), walked right up to them and just said, " do you realize it is people like my son that give you the freedom to say what you just said without getting shot?" and walked away leaving them speechless. At that point I made a decision to make the military my career. 20 years later I retired. I realize I may have hi-jacked this thread but, thought it was worth saying. Jim

I agree with ScootlessWonder and TerriLee - when a forum has been on for awhile the self help and wiki type information becomes really bulky and tough to navigate. That is why search engines have become such a boon when libraries are brimming. The key to finding answers when coming to a forum IS to utilize the search engines available. You need 3 things to succeed...Abilities, Resources and Time -- ART if you will. You have to have all three in great measure. Any lacking in the 3 will mean you will come away without the answer...and be patient, anything worthwhile means you have to WANT it bad enough. BTW thank you TerriLee for the "human side" of the forum, often we enter forums only to find a subject/answer and never really know who basically "butters our bread" and makes us rich just by being here! We all want quick answers to pressing issues, but the whining goes both ways...yes I have some suggestions...the banner on the top is WAY too big, so it dwarfs the pull down tabs. Being a new, I am amazed how many knowledgeable new people are here on the ScootDawg forum who freely take the time to post up...I'm used to seeing most senior members to have over a 1000 posts. This is a very friendly and straight up site. To the OP...take heart and be patient...your experience was in the minority, I would gladly post up and help those whom I can whenever I can...but my experience in scooters is limited to about 1 1/2 years experience with a Vespa GT200 and 1 year with the Baron VLA150, but over 30 years in two wheeled sportbikes, so don't judge random responses when there are many 1000's of members posting up every day.

==> ... but we also have jobs and lives like every one else ...
You mean there's a world OUTSIDE of Scootdawg?
Just keeping up with the General and 50cc forums takes up a significant amount of time. Of course, I'm one of the lucky few who actually DO get paid for what they love. Once I stop loving my job, I move on to the next one. I guess that's why I'm not working in lower Manhattan anymore.
I believe the #1 issue here is education. Not in scooters, but in schools teaching kids technology. They teach the ABC's, 123's, and I even remember being taught in 1st grade how to use the telephone. Schools need to learn basic SEARCH TECHNIQUES.
While natural language searches have gotten better over the years, Proboards is based on 30 year old BBS technology and really hasn't been updated. It's core is code "borrowed" from FREE bulletin board building software. Yes, I remember when Proboards started and HOW they started. They're doing well keeping a 20 year old design alive.
My point is that the built in search function SUCKS. Even the Google search at the bottom isn't that great because it relies on REAL TEXT searching of the actual text of the post. Once you understand the mechanics of basic un-hinted searching you become better at finding the one post you want to find in the 200,000 or so past posts.
Don't just think of search terms... think also of the words people are LIKELY to write in a post, as they aren't the same. The post may be about a CARBURETOR, but the word CARBURETOR does not exist anywhere in the post so it will not show up in a search. "carburetta, carb, curb, intake thingy" may show up though. Just think more about how people type and post and you will get better search results.
Greg

Terri,
I'm also one of those that volunteered to sacrifice my life, should the necessity arise, to give ALL of you here the freedoms to do exactly what we're doing now. Fortunately I was never called to the task of making that ultimate sacrifice though there have been submariners that have made the sacrifice.
And for those that don't believe submariners face danger, feel free to watch this video
Bear in mind the reports being made starting at :33 until the final report is made is ALL real and 2 men lost their lives in this. Tell me you aren't affected by the reports.
I'd like to think I live a life deserving of the freedoms I've fought for personally.
As for drawc, There are so many resources out there that you can review before posting a half a$$ed question with little to no information making you look lie you're completely lazy and seeking someone to fix your scooter for you. You say if we've answered it 100 times answer it one more time? If we've answered it 100 times how about you search for it and read the 100 answers we've already typed instead of asking the question again?
Seriously, you're only serving to make yourself look like a whiny spoiled brat by continuing to argue the half-donkey post you started this thread with. And congratulations. You've officially ended yourself up on the "I'm NEVER going to bother reading another of your threads again" list. I don't suffer fools or whiners lightly and so far you're doing a good job fitting into both categories.
