I too agree ron. Most likely an assembly problem like you said above. You get that timing off just a little bit and you can and will have contact. Or you just plain and simple mishandle the parts. Should have left it alone.

You only have .05mm clearance to begin with. My money is on he didnt adjust the valves right and he kept messing with the timing till he bent a valve. Just a guess at this point

if your not 100% on the valve timing the first time its possible the intake valve hit the piston bending it. once you start to reassemble id put the jug on and turn it so the piston is top dead center to make sure its not sticking out past the jug to far, if it is double up on the base gaskets.

I'll bet he didn't have the stator flywheel lined up at TDC either.

probably had it at the F line or something....
when i set the chain on the cam gear, i slide everything right up against the side of the chain well and look where the 2 small holes are.... i cant eyeball it that well unless i do that.
Do these things even run with they are 1 tooth off?

I think I recall reading this post or something similar awhile ago but anyway, My guess is what Cyberbeer said might be accurate. The flywheel must be lined up at the T mark AS WELL AS the cam lining up as described.
