You can look for a used Honda/Kymco or other major retail scooter, or roll the bones with a new drop-shipped scooter, you can get one for well under $1000 delivered but you never know what can happen that route. The best reliable for under $1000 will depend on what available in your area. New 50cc scooters from Honda for example are well over $1000. Good luck on your search.

i'm looking for the most reliable 50cc scooter STOP jerking everyone's chain by starting multiple threads on essentially the same topic, and research previous forum discussions before posting. Since you are already considering a 80cc modification, why purchase a scooter that is NOT suitable for your performance expectations?

Since you are already considering a 80cc modification, why purchase a scooter that is NOT suitable for your performance expectations? Don't worry about him. I have a bargain basement 50cc Scooter I paid $588 for a year and a half ago and I am almost at 8,900 miles. I've never had the motor apart HOWEVER it requires constant maintenance to ever get that far. I work on my Scooter virtually EVERY weekend. It may only be something small and easy but you need to put some time into to keep it going. Now if you aren't mechanically inclined then you might want to find a good used Honda, Yamaha, Kymco, etc. Something that doesn't require as much maintenance.

i'm having problems justifying paying that much for an 1100 cycle..before you murmur"you get what you pay for", keep in mind a 50cc scoot is little more than a two wheel lawnmower. I paid $300 for my xingyue..**yeh it figures**, and haven't had a problem with it; just jump on and go. this was an auction item purchased by someone else, then sold to me as-is..a 150cc scoot for $800, online, sounds right to me; but for a 50cc, i wouldn't expect to pay more than $500, new. Now, with all that having been said, I'm an old guy who walked ten miles to school every morning in my youth...and my youth was when television was invented. I still think Cokes should cost a quarter...see: to people like me, the dollar menu at BK and McD's just makes plain sense.

I have a $1000 Raleigh in the garage complete with clipless pedals. The differences are so minimal (gripshift vs. STI, quick release axle vs. nuts) a neophyte coudn't tell the difference. They both have 700c wheels, OK mine are presta, theirs are regular valves. I used to ride centuries (100 miles) and I wouldn't flinch at doing it on these. Plus my kids seem to be doing just fine riding them all over the place.

make sure if sticking with a 50cc you select a "2-stroke" model to achieve acceptable performance...the cheap 4 strokes 50's are good for a putt-putt ride at school zone speeds

They are slowly going the way of the Dinosaur. I personally don't like the Weedeater sound a 2 stroke makes. But too each his own.

Depending on where you live getting a 150cc can be considerably more money. I know here in Florida you must have a MC endorsement to ride a 150cc, which means you have to take a class. The class cost an additional $199 when on special ($275 regular price). So when you add that too the additional cost of a 150cc over a 50cc and the extra money for the class it just gets too expensive. I know when I bought mine I had a limited amount of money too spend and could not afford the additional money for the 150cc and the class.

an easy way for making a decision as to the durability/reliability/performance of a 50cc scooter is to simply contact one of the many scooter rental agencies located in vacation areas to see which ones they use.....

This all started because he rented a TGB two stroke in the Keys. Now he wants to buy a 50cc scooter for $1000 or less that goes as well as a TGB-what $2000 or more. Sorry $1899 untaxed www.gekgo.com/tgb-gas-scooters.htmlScroll down and see the specs. 4.4 horsepower against 3.0 for your average China scoot, Mikuni carb. Only a slight difference.

I still say for what he wants, it is going to cost less to get a 150cc and pay some insurance. unless of course he has a suspended license, in which case no insurance will cover him. john Of course. Green Earth is selling its cheapest 150 for $699 and this one is $759. www.greenearthscooters.com/detail.cfm?id=688A good PDI and he would be set for a long time and could carry two people easily. I don't know what State he's in, here it's all about top speed. Anything over 30 mph and you have to have an M license. Driver's license and insurance for everything.

I checked and the MSRP on it is about $1800 so $1000 would be a good price if you were nearby and could pick it up. I was just using it as an example. Craigslist and Ebay are good places to find second tier scooters at good prices. I saw a 250 Hyosung near me that I could probably get for a reasonable price if I were in the market.
