Hey guys,
I just bought a 2004 Kymco People 250 with 6k miles from a Impound Tow Yard for $700 - clean title. The catch was, when i went to the DMV to pay the registration, it hadnt been paid for 4 years. Another $500 bucks for registration. So the total came out to about $1200, still not a bad deal at all.
I brought the scooter home, needed a new battery, put it in and it ran fine. BUT, after about 10 minutes of riding the temperature gauge gets very close to the HIGH level and sometime goes into the red. I thought to change all the fluids. I changed the engine oil, the gear oil, and added distilled water for the liquid cooling system. I rode it again and it rode for a little longer before again getting very close to the RED temperature.
Does anyone have any idea as to why this is happening?
Thanks for the help.

did u put coolant in the radiator? If so, check the level again. Some of these need to be "burped" in order to get all the air out of the system. You run the engine while adding coolant until the level stays up. Happened to me the first time I change the coolant. Find some 50/50 motorcycle premix or something like that. It'll save u having to mix it yourself.

I don't know this bike, as mine is another brand, but usually the radiator is up front in the fairing somewhere. You might want to do a search on "kymco p250 owners manual" to see if you can download one.

If you rev it up with the cap open, any big air bubble with come out (along with most of the anti-freeze)
But if you added distilled water, you must know where the radiator is......

dineshd,
Brown is not good (some rust in the radiator). Either green or like pink is good. Replace that coolant ASAP. I suspect that old coolant in there for a long period of time (more than 3 years) without changing.

Ya, buying a used scooter, can sometimes be a bad thing. I mean, because you do not know what can be wrong with it. Check your fluids often to make sure not leaking also. Mainly the oil and coolant. Make that engine is sound.. The reason I tell you this, is because a blown head gasket causes engine overheating and also coolant leaking into the oil.

Is your fan coming on?

its liquid cooled, does it have a fan as well?

Usually they do. Some do not. If there is a fan, it sits right in front of or behind the radiator.
did you burp it? Gotta do that or it will overheat.

Here's what i did, emptied out the radiatior, filled it up, kept the cap off, turned the engine on, let the air bubbles rise for about 5 minutes, then closed the cap.

did you top off the coolant after the bubbles came out? thats a negative, ill do that and check if the fan is coming on, is the fan always running? Like if i turn the bike on should the fan come on as well or does it only come on at high temperatures?

No I don't, although you are close to Berts, they are a Kymco dealer, and that does not necessarliy mean that the do good work. I bought my 2 Kymcos there, although I have not had them back there either. I had some warranty performed at Temple City powersports. I am in Alhambra

If this scoot is like mine, the fan should kick in at a moderate temperature, before it reaches redline.

Ya, I would replace parts like the water pump, coolant, check radiator to make sure not clogged with rust, change thermostat.. Do these things that will not cost alot of money. The guy before you owned this, evidently did not do required maintenance.. I would not let it heat up past 80 % of being hot. Can cause severe damage to the engine, being redlined. Please check out things out good before starting it. If you are not very mechanical, well bring it to a KYMCO shop near you.

Thanks for the help guys, i flushed the coolant out 3 times to get all the rust out. That managed to keep the engine from getting too hot on the 10 minute ride to the Kymco dealer. I put it in for the 6k mile service .... cant wait to get it back.

let us all know what yo think of it. My new years resolution is to save for either the Sym HD200 or the People 250.

Go with the SYM and you will never look back (except at all the cars trying to keep up with you).

I had an old overheating 250, the fuse for the fan had blown. - causing overheating. Then the temp. sensors went out, causing overheating...then, Went for the SYM HD200, 8000 problem free miles - well, almost. - my rear tire is starting to show signs of wear - but 8000 miles is pretty good for a rear tire...

Since SYM does not manufacture tires, I don't think that counts as a problem.
