Hey Guys, Just got this thing a couple of days ago and wanted to kind of get a little info on it. The bike is a Roketa MC 74 150cc. I've driven it around a bit the past couple of days and so far so good. Handles the road well and does about 55 with my wife and I on it. Went ahead and changed the oil and cleaned the screen and have been feeling good. Seems like a pretty fun bike. I had a couple of questions so I'll know what to do when I get parts and such. First is this a GY6 engine? Is a GY6 a manufacturer or just a style of engine? The guy who had it has had it for a little over a year and put about 1600 miles on it. He said he believe he's gotten everything tightened up as they often have some loose parts here and there. Is there anything else I should get into on this? I'm thinking about perhaps adding an oil cooler to it. Any good ones I should look at? Also any recommended oils or additives on this thing? It says 15 w 40 in the manual which is what I put in, but I'm almost leaning for a 20w50 for the hot Georgia Summer. I keep thinking about the 100degree heat and oil braking down. Perhaps a lucas stabilizer? Anyway let me know your thoughts. Take Care, Mike

GY6 is an engine style.
You will most like have either a 1P57QMJ or a 157QMJ long engine. It'll be stamped on the engine case near the kick stand.
15w40 is plenty good enough. Synthetic holds up under heat better then dino oil.

Sweet. Thanks. I'm probably going to go ahead and check the valve clearance as well. Should it be around .003 or .004 like a lot of these other scooters?

I usually set them to .004 both intake and exhaust and have had good luck with that setting. As Harry said mechanics preference and the Roketa MC 74 does have a GY6 style motor.

wow congratulations on the new scooter and welcome to the forums!! I highly recommend replacing all fuel lines and vacuum lines with american made ones like goodyear R7 heres a link www.goodyearep.com/ProductsDetail.aspx?id=10526 you can usually find this at any auto parts store. this is due to the USA using more ethanol in fuels here. Chinese rubber will crack and deteriorate and clog your carb jets and leak. i don't think you really need an oil cooler .however, there are a few people who added ones to theirs you could search the forums im sure you will find a few under "cooler". the gy6 has pretty good cooling as long as it is moving.a lot of stop and go traffic is the reason you would need extra cooling or of course if you where racing it with performance upgrades. 20w50 isn't necessary and it is expensive . good 15w40 will do. i recommend shell rotella t because it has moly and is cheap. even though the previous owner claims everything is tight, i personally wouldn't trust him on his word. i would personally do a PDI myself and make sure everything is good to go. think about this, what if you are riding down the road and something happens when you are going 50 MPH .i would rather have the piece of mind that everything was good for sure, due to i just checked it myself. also i recommend changing your tire valve stems ASAP. check the sticky scootdawg.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=16275 . Chinese valve stems are very dangerous and there is a few dawgs on the forums here that had theirs blow out while they where going pretty fast. If you haven't please take the basic rider's safety course .its very helpful and informative. I hope this helps you and i hope you wear all your safety gear (helmet, gloves and proper clothing) again welcome to the forums. I hope you enjoy your new scooter!

Sweet. I did start going through it a bit unfortunately last night. Got stuck in a downpour and the scoot died and everything electrical kind of crapped out. As I started looking through a few things last night I actually noticed the throttle cable lock nut was just dangling, the center stand bolt was almost off, the variator cover had screws coming out and the new battery was an issue. The guy told me he had just bought a new battery but didn't have a cover so just put tape over the holes but not to worry it was a dry batter. Well it's not a dry battery he just didn't get the acid with it. So the battery was pretty much crap. Also it was way too small for the compartment and moving around in there AND the negative post was missing the nut to tighten up the connection. Anyway I went and got a new batter and made that all tight, but then the lights weren't working. I found some shorted wires going to the mirrors and taped those and the lights started working. I'm assuming that was the issue. Hopefully it doesn't come back. Also noticed the rubber cover wasn't completely over the coil so I put that on a little better. Hopefully I will have a little better luck next time it rains. I did look around at the lines and they appear to be cracking a bit so yes that will probably be a good move and I'll get to those valve stems as well. I also think my turn signal switch may be acting up. I have to hold it on for the right turn, but the left turn works fine. Are these generally available?

i usually spray my wires down every few months with some silicone spray to help waterproof and protect from rust. hope this helps.

Even better. I ended up finding the connection loose at the back of the switch and reconnected and it's been working fine for a few days now. Ignition switch also had a loose connector. I actually took the scoot for a nice long drive to Atlanta and back on Sunday for a real test drive (around 140 mi round trip) with the wife on the back. It actually holds about 55 on straightaways with no real problem with both of us on it. I was keeping up with traffic pretty well. As of tomorrow I will have had the scoot one week and after the one day of issues and finding some nice little fixes it's been pretty great. I'm tempted to look into a couple of mods now, but it's scary to mess with it considering how well it's been doing. I am considering maybe some exhaust and air intake mods to see how they go. Maybe then some variator/clutch upgrades. Of course I have some more questions too. Do these have any kind of restrictor in the stock exhaust or air intake? Also I've been reading up about removing the washer on the variator. Has anybody had good results with that? And one more question. On the handlebars next to the throttle and above the cutoff switch is a clear plastic window that looks almost like a sightglass. Does this serve any purpose? All I see under it is wires. Is this just so you can see that you have wires under there in case someone questioned the presence of wires? Also I'm familiar with automotive ABS. How does the abs work on this? I'm assuming it has something to do with the big brass valve looking thing mounted behind the caliper and I doubt there is a whole control unit with sensors and all like a car, but I'm curious about how it works. I'm sure I'll come up with more questions as I drive the scoot more. Thanks, Mike

Of course I have some more questions too. Do these have any kind of restrictor in the stock exhaust or air intake? Also I've been reading up about removing the washer on the variator. 150cc's are not restricted to comply with any law like 50cc's. There are engineering 'tradeoffs'. I.E. You want a muffler that won't wake the dead...then that has a performance penalty.

Yeah I'm definitely trying to not go the route of being obnoxious with it and like I said I don't want to mod this thing till it blows up. I'd much rather have reliability than crazy speed. Just getting ideas and making sure I'm using this baby to it's full potential. I may keep pondering a few little mods, but probably won't act on any of them anytime soon, just enjoy the new fun ride.

On your ABS question it's mostly an 'anti panic' valve as best as I can figure out. I managed to lock up the front wheel in the MSF course. Of course that's the proper place to test the limits on ones braking system.
The weights in your CVT seem to be the 'biggest' bang for your buck...or could be no difference as far as mods. The factories aren't consistant on which ones they put in, pretty much 'pot luck'. If your looking for longevity then you want waits heavy enough to keep your revs at 8K or below but light enough that pulling a steep hill you are revving somewhere around 6500 RPM as that is max torque.

bigbassg, You stated that you and your wife are cruising at 55mph with a stock 150cc engine. Just curious, but what is the combined weight of you and your wife? 55mph "two up" is a great speed. Is this actual speed or "Chino-speed"? ( some speedometers are as much as 10mph off and usually register higher than actual speed) If this is actual speed I'd like to know if the previous owner had some work done on it before you bought it. I'm around 250 lbs and I've had my scooter up to 55mph but that is WOT and 8,000rpm and only for a short time.

It is a possibility it's had a bit of work on it from the previous owner. I don't know a whole lot about the history of it and was too excited about getting to go for a ride to ask too much when I was getting it. I have read a bit on the speedometers being off and I haven't measured it against my car or a gps yet, but judging from traffic it didn't seem to be too far off. I was traveling on a state highway with 55 mph speed limit and keeping up pretty well. There were a couple of pretty big uphills where I felt a little slow but for the most part no problems keeping up in traffic. I might look through it a bit more and see what I find out about it. One thing I've noticed about this scooter in general is it doesn't necessarily jump at takeoff like my old 50cc 2 cycle did. I assumed this to be mostly due to just being a heavier bike with a little bit different gearing and 4 stroke engine, but perhaps there's been a bit of tinkering already to get it a little better speed. In any case it's seeming like a pretty fun ride.

I have a Roket MC74 150K It was a cool scooter and everything was working fine until I took it up to about 60 MPH on the freeway. It looked like it was a little close to redline so i backed off. Since then me electronic ignition, horn, turn signals and RPM Guage wont work. I check the fuse and battery and it;s all good. I can still kick start the scooter but it;s a pain! What should I do? This sucks

After mine got wet. I had some similar problems and I ended up taking some stuff off to reveal frayed wires shorting out at the mirrors. Try popping the mirrors off and check the wiring. Also might check any other wiring for bad connections. Check both ends of the battery cables, as well as the various grounds. Just some thoughts. Also sounds like perhaps a faulty ignition swith? And from what I've been getting told there are also some issues with the alarm system. But I'd probably check all the wiring first. I found a lot of loose connectors here and there too that just needed to be pushed in and that fixed a lot of the problems that I've encountered so far.
